Jaipur’s ‘floating’ palace isn’t really floating at all.

This marvellous feat of Indian engineering is the Jal Mahal, built in 1699. Rather astoundingly, four of its five storeys sit beneath man-made Man Sagar Lake. It was expanded by Maharaja Madho Singh I in the 18th century, when it then became the ultimate summer playground for India’s elite - perfect for those who don’t appreciate nosy neighbors.

Here, the palace comes with a pool.

Situated just 4km away from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi in India, Evolve Back Kamalapura Palace is a truly unique property. The hotel’s designers spent months studying the rare architectural style of the 14th-century Vijayanagara Palaces called ‘Vijayanagara Royal Style’. At first glance, this stepwell looks like it was built purely for aesthetics.

In fact, Panna Meena ka Kund’s eight symmetrical levels were built 200 meters deep for a much more practical reason: reaching and storing water in arid Amer. The stepwell formed part of the old town’s water system, with steps descending towards the reservoir and shaded corners offering respite from the heat. It’s a wonderfully clever piece of Rajasthan’s architectural history, but easily missed beneath the grandeur of Amber Fort.

There are a few theories as to how Jodhpur became India’s ‘Blue City’…

This use of colour is thought to have originated in Brahmpuri, where Brahmin families painted their homes with indigo-tinted limewash to distinguish them from other houses. Another theory is more practical: copper sulphate was added to the limewash to help deter termites and insects. Some even say it helps cool the houses. Whatever the original reason, the colour spread until Jophpur became a sea of blue beneath Mehrangarh Fort.

Not Italy. Not France. It is Georgia that has the world’s oldest w**e-making culture.

Archaeologists discovered ancient clay vessels known as qvevri containing grape seeds dating back to around 6000 BC. The traditional qvevri method is still used today; it is so culturally significant that UNESCO has recognised it as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In Kakheti, Georgia’s celebrated w**e region, harvest season is a time for community. Families and guests gather to pick and tread grapes before sitting down to a supra, which is a lavish feast accompanied by w**e and polyphonic singing.
