Heavy autumn snow has arrived early in the Alps, and the coming ski season is already looking promising.

Heavy late-October storms have swept across the mountains, delivering more than 50 cm of fresh snow in parts of the western Alps, with around 30 cm settling on higher slopes above 2,200–3,000m. Peaks across France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy are turning white down to roughly 1,600m, with classic high-altitude resorts like Zermatt, Tignes, Chamonix, Verbier, Hintertux and Kaunertal already enjoying an early winter feel and some glacier areas expanding operations.

It is still early days, but cold temperatures and this first proper blanket of snow are an encouraging sign for a great winter ahead. Having lived in Austria for 18 years, and I return two or three times a year, I can tell you that the locals are rather excited. If you are already dreaming of crisp mountain air, freshly groomed pistes and cosy fireside evenings, now is a fantastic time to start planning your ski escape.
