What a weekend for the Northern Lights!

From the Northumberland coastline and the east coast of England to the skies above Norway, Sweden and Finland, the Aurora has been putting on some spectacular displays.

Clear skies and strong solar activity have provided incredible viewing opportunities, with beautiful shades of green, pink and purple captured across the UK, including some remarkable photographs from Northumberland.

Further Aurora activity is forecast for this week, with more opportunities for those lucky enough to have clear skies.

The Northern Lights season is certainly making its presence felt this October, and the team at Aurora Nights will be keeping a close eye on what happens next.

A powerful Earth directed CME left the Sun on 6th October and is now heading our way, with current forecasts suggesting it could reach Earth during the early hours of Friday 9th October. Approximately 5am in Sweden and Norway, 6am in Finland and 3am in Iceland.

SpaceWeather says the impact could trigger a G2 geomagnetic storm, while forecasts are pointing towards Kp levels around 5 to 6 during parts of Friday.

For anyone travelling in the Nordics, this is one to keep an eye on. If the CME arrives as forecast and conditions line up, we could see stronger and more widespread Northern Lights displays under some beautifully dark October skies.

As always with the Aurora, timings and strength can change right up until the solar wind reaches Earth, but this is certainly looking interesting.

The Aurora season is well and truly underway.

With the nights now darker across the Nordics, we are seeing the Northern Lights appearing regularly again, from soft green arcs on the horizon to brighter displays moving across the sky.

It is always a special point in the year when Aurora sightings become part of the rhythm of the season again, and the months ahead bring plenty more opportunities to look upwards.

For us, this is what autumn and winter in the north are all about.

The skies over Kiruna really came to life last night, with a strong Aurora putting on an incredible display for our team in Swedish Lapland.

A brilliant way to start the season, and a sign that the darker nights are well and truly returning.
