Every two years competitors come together from all across Central Asia and indeed the world to compete in their traditional nomadic heritage sports at the !

This year the games were held in with many YellowWood Adventurers enjoying the fun whilst also being immersed in the cultural traditions of the region.

One of the most popular sports to watch is ‘Kok boru’, a traditional Central Asian team sport played on horseback where two teams of riders wrestle for control of a goat carcass to score goals.

“Kok boru” translates from Kyrgyz and ancient Turkic languages as “gray wolf” as the game stems from ancient nomadic hunting rituals when herders chased wolves that threatened their livestock. Carrying the wolf carcass back turned into a display of bravery and skill.

“Amazing, life changing experience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We are a family of four (kids are 5 and 8). We wanted spend two weeks opening our eyes and minds to a part of the world we had never visited before.

We have never been to sub Saharan Africa before. is not easy to get around unless you are with someone who knows how it all works, so without YellowWood organising all of our travel, transfers and connections, would have been a very testing and stressful couple of weeks.

They have clearly spent a lot of time and consideration selecting the partners they work with and piecing together a trip that seems so straightforward (but is actually very complicated) that allowed us to see so much of this incredible country in a relatively short time without ever feeling rushed or stressed.

Every day was packed with adventure. There was always something memorable and impactful happening. We didn’t want to miss a thing which meant we had very very tired kids by the end of the day. Fortunately, YW knew this would be the case and made sure everywhere they picked for us to stay were very restful and comfortable. Being able to recuperate after a long day was the key to our amazing time. The food was all delicious and flexible for the picky eaters. The camps and hotels were all incredibly welcoming and felt very indulgent. The experience of YW and their partners was so valuable as everything had been thought of before we needed to ask.

We were worried that our kids might have been a bit young for this sort of trip, and had we not had such experienced tour operators we may well have been right, but YW delivered the perfect balance of adventure and comfort, tailored for our needs rather than a one size fits all.

I cannot recommend them highly enough.

For the same price as two weeks in a European resort devoid of culture, I would chose adventure every time. And YW will be the ones helping us.”

Walk in their Footsteps…

We crafted this route with local guides to take our travellers deep into the heart of the Tian Shan.

You’ll view glaciers, cross white-water rivers and hike across valleys on this adventure through a world still unaltered by man.

Our traveller Jennifer has just returned from this walking adventure and has shared some brilliant shots with us. 📸

Would you be able to place Angola on a map?

With only a small portion of the country being covered by a road network, this is a destination that few people know about, and that is part of what makes it so exciting.

If road tripping and setting up camp with Angolan natives is your kind of adventure holiday, Angola should be on your radar. Alongside it’s dusty deserts and humid rainforests, it’s an absolute dream for photographers.

Uganda isn’t just all about its incredible Gorillas.

Swipe to see some of the other incredible wildlife sighted on a Western Uganda safari. Emma was lucky enough to spot giraffes, elephants, water buffalo, oribi and many savannah woodland birds.

Common sightings in Western Uganda also include lions, Jackson’s hartebeest, waterbuck and occasionally the elusive leopard.

As always with a safari drive, there are no guarantees. And that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Western Uganda’s wildlife is something else. Conservationists are working hard to protect and rebuild, and as a result, elephant numbers are stabilising, wild rhinos have been reintroduced, and lion tracking programmes are in place.

Uganda really does offer some of the best wildlife ecotourism in the world.

You have the opportunity to experience this for yourself in our Western Uganda Safari adventure.
