Auko Eco-Wellness Lodges 🇻🇳

Phong Nha in Vietnam has been on our radar for a while now. It's got Son Doong, the world's largest cave, and a national park with limestone caving systems that date back 400 million years, making it one of the most dramatic settings.

It's never had particularly high-end hotels though. Until now.

Thirty canvas lodges on stilts, a natural cave chamber for sound rituals, and dining that's genuinely forest-to-table at Origin Restaurant with wild-foraged herbs and river fish.

What makes it even more interesting is that the wellness side hasn't replaced the adventure that put Phong Nha on the map: boat trips to the caves, jungle treks and local community visits are all still there.

There's a reason this bay sits within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. 🌊

From May until November, southwest monsoons pull plankton in, drawing manta rays and whale sharks in to feed. Aim for the tail end of the season (now until November) for the best chance of an encounter.

At , several overwater villas let you slip straight into the house reef from your own deck, to snorkel alongside turtles and coral before you've had your first bite of breakfast.

There's a natural "blue hole" just off the jetty too, and an active coral restoration project to get involved in.

A far cry from the region's newer, man-made islands, Vakkaru is covered with 2,300 coconut palms. This is proper island life, just the way we like it.

This is one of the best places to spot whales and dolphins in the wild, between December - March.

And no, we'd never put you on a crowded boat. Board a traditional sailboat, or take to the skies for a bird's-eye view while staying at one of our favourite retreats: Malabar Hill.

A short drive up from the coast, this hotel's design draws on Moorish and Indian influences you see in its arches and tiles, the restaurant looks straight out over the Indian Ocean and has some of the best food we've had on the island.

Let's hear it for the unsung heros: the mahouts of Mae Sot. 🙌

🐘 work hard to improve the lives of Asian Elephants in Thailand. In the northern mountains, near the Myanmar border, the charity protects 92,000 acres of forest, so their rescued elephants can roam free rather than be sold back into the tourism industry.

💬Our co-founder, Tom, went to see the project for himself and reported back: "My stay at Mahouts was the best travel experience I’ve had in years. Proper ETG stuff: it’s travel with Give Back, authentic and engaging on multiple levels, from wildlife to culture to conservation. You spend time with elephants in the most ethical way possible, explore a really remote region untouched by mass tourism and live alongside a Karen hilltribe community.”

A long-time ETG favourite, immerses you properly in the rainforest of .

You wake to the sounds of monkeys and tropical birds outside, and it also allows more flexibility than the larger hotels in the area, so we can arrange the right activities at the right time for you.

Best for: Families with teenagers as sleeping up in the canopy feels like a real adventure. And Nature-loving couples after something a bit raw and real.
Not ideal for: Anyone who considers air-con a non-negotiable or those after a polished hotel experience. (If you’d prefer a touch more comfort, I can recommend a better fit.) I’d also steer away travellers with limited mobility, as there are many walkways and steps here.

Holly's Top Tip: Don't miss the nocturnal jungle walk, using UV torches rather than iPhone torches, I spotted a scorpion glowing in the undergrowth.

This was hard to narrow down but this lakeside stay came out on top of the flock 🪶

is home to over 200 species of bird, visible right from your veranda.

Here's how to experience this rural retreat like an insider:

🛶 Take a sunset boat out onto the lake: spot osprey, white-throated kingfishers, swamp hens and darters as the light drops.
🍽️ Sit down to a dinner that goes beyond the usual Rajasthani classics, a welcome change after days of rich regional cooking.
🌅 Wake to sunrise over the water, then spot kingfishers again at breakfast while the reeds rustle.
🐐 Head into the village: a school full of curious children, women rolling rotis for lunch, an 8th-century temple, and if you're as lucky as Zoe was, an invitation into a farmer's home to meet his baby goats.

Just look at those embroidered bird motifs on every canvas-covered room 🕊️

We'd recommend a minimum of three nights, this isn't a stay you rush. Binoculars non-negotiable.
