𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗵'𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿.

Meet the antlion larva. It digs a perfect little sand funnel, buries itself at the bottom and waits for an unlucky ant to slip in. Spooky? Absolutely. Genius? Also yes.

It is the horror movie of the insect world, playing out quietly in the dust while the big cats get all the attention. Our guides love crouching down on game walks to show guests what is going on beneath their boots.

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘂𝗽. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻-𝘂𝗽 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁.

Vultures get a bad rap, but they are some of the hardest working conservationists in Africa. With stomach acid strong enough to handle bacteria that would floor most animals, they clear carcasses fast and help stop disease from spreading through the bush.

Sadly, many African vultures are now seriously threatened by poisoning and habitat loss, which makes every graceful shadow across the sky feel a little more precious.

On our safaris, guests learn why these birds matter and how responsible travel supports the people protecting them. Not exactly pretty, but absolutely essential.

𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵. 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Meet the leopard tortoise, the undisputed champion of taking things slowly. These gentle grazers can live for 50 years or more, so if one looks unimpressed with your schedule, it has seen a lot of schedules.

This one paused for a drink with its own reflection, and we paused with it. That is the secret of a good safari: the best moments are rarely in a hurry.

Our small groups of eight or fewer mean we can stop, wait and watch properly. No stampede, no ticking clock.

𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘴. 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴.

Today we are tipping our hats (politely, from a safe distance) to the cold-blooded crew who have been perfecting the art of doing absolutely nothing for millions of years.

Think of the Nile crocodile, sunbathing on a riverbank like it owns the place. Because honestly, it does. Or the chameleon in the bush, rolling each eye in a different direction and somehow still judging your hiking outfit. Or the turtles gliding over a reef, completely unbothered by the fact that the rest of us are paying good money to chase them with a camera.

Here is the thing we love most about reptiles: they are conservation quiet achievers. Crocodiles keep rivers and wetlands healthy. Lizards and snakes keep rodent numbers in check. Remove them, and the whole story starts to unravel.

That is the heart of what we do. Our guides love sharing exactly this kind of "oh, so THAT is why it matters" knowledge on our safari and dive journeys, so you come home with better photos and a bigger appreciation for the wild (and yes, sightings are never guaranteed, because nature keeps her own schedule).

Nobody warned us it was going to be the size of a dining table.

The ocean sunfish — mola mola — is the largest bony fish in the world. It can reach three metres. It weighs as much as a small car. And it moves through the water like it genuinely cannot imagine why anyone would be in a hurry about anything.

Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida is one of the best places on the planet to encounter them. Our guides know the season, the depth, and the cold thermocline currents that bring these extraordinary animals up from the deep to the cleaning stations. When conditions are right, you descend through blue water and find yourself sharing the ocean with something that should not, by any reasonable measure, exist.

𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘁: 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀.

The elephant shrew, or sengi, is not a shrew at all. DNA shows it sits closer to elephants, aardvarks and manatees than to shrews, which is the kind of fact that ruins every future dinner party in the best way.

That twitchy nose works like a mini trunk, and those little legs can sprint at an astonishing pace to dodge predators. Here it is, caught mid-sip at a rock pool, completely unbothered by our shutter.

This is the stuff we love sharing on safari. Not just what you are looking at, but why it is wonderfully weird.

It is 6am. The boat smells like neoprene and coffee. Nobody is complaining.

Before the sun has properly decided what it is doing, we are already out past the break at Scottburgh, heading for Aliwal Shoal. The water has that pre-dawn grey that makes everything feel slightly unreal. Then someone spots a dolphin bow-riding alongside the boat, and everyone forgets they were ever cold.

This is not a holiday. This is a reset.
