If you've met Lucia, then what she's planning probably won't surprise you too much... π
Next week, she'll be heading to the Sahara Desert ready for 'The World's Toughest Foot Race', the Legendary Marathon des Sables.
It's hard to put into perspective what this means... as it's pretty flipping bonkers. Over the course of the 250km race (7 consecutive days), Lucia will run 30-40km per day through the extreme heat of the desert. The London Marathon is 42km.
That's every day except Day 4, where she'll cover 85km over a mammoth 48-hour stint. 2 x back-to-back London Marathons. In one day. Through the Sahara. (Today's forecast: 36 degrees).
She'll need to carry everything she needs on her back. Her food for 7 nights, her equipment, power bank, clothes and sleeping bag and mat - approx. 10kgs in total. About the weight of a car tyre. At night, she'll sleep on the desert floor, under the Sahara stars. The temperature can dip to single figures in the night, so Lucia needs to carefully balance the need to pack light, with the necessity to keep warm and semi-comfortable to give her enough energy to get through the next day.
You might be wondering why on Earth a person would do such a thing.
Lucia has been clear of Leukaemia for four years now and has the most unbelievable outlook on life that you can imagine. Attempting this crazy feat is a celebration of being alive, and in support of the beautiful work of Reuben's Retreat; a charity so close to the travel industry's heart.
Every penny raised will go towards Reuben's, a special place for families of children with complex medical needs or dealing with the loss of a child, to relax, recharge, remember and rebuild.
