🇵🇹 Porto is the kind of city you can spend hours exploring without really needing a plan.

Start by heading down towards the Douro and take in that famous view across the river. With the colourful buildings of Ribeira rising up the hillside and Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite bank, it’s one of those views that makes you want to stop for a drink and stay a while.

But don’t spend your whole trip around the river.

Head up into Cedofeita and you’ll find a completely different side of Porto. Independent shops, galleries, little cafés, w**e bars and restaurants line the streets, giving the neighbourhood a more creative and local feel.

It’s a great area to wander around in the afternoon, find somewhere for a coffee and then settle into a bar as the evening starts.

And that’s what we love about Porto. You’ve got the spectacular views and historic streets, but also neighbourhoods where you can slow down and experience the city at its own pace.

🇵🇹 There’s something about wandering the streets of Lisbon.

It’s the tiled buildings, colourful facades, balconies covered in washing, little squares you stumble across and the sound of trams making their way up impossibly steep streets.

But if you want to see a different side of the city, head to Anjos.

Anjos has a completely different feel to some of Lisbon’s more touristy areas. It’s independent, creative and a little bit rough around the edges, with neighbourhood cafés, small bars, vintage shops and restaurants tucked away between the residential streets.

It’s the kind of area where you can spend a morning hopping between coffee shops, stop for lunch somewhere you’ve never heard of and spend the afternoon simply wandering without much of a plan.

And there’s plenty more to discover across the city.

🐙 Taberna Sal Grosso, over in Santa Apolónia, is one we’d recommend for its brilliant Portuguese food, especially the octopus.

🍺 Outro Lado, in Intendente, is another favourite for a craft b**r or two and a great way to experience a different part of Lisbon after dark.

Because while Lisbon has its must-see sights, we think the best bits are often found between them.

Take the long way. Explore the side streets. Find a tiny café. Sit down for a coffee. See where you end up.

That’s Lisbon.

🇲🇰 Skopje: the city break you probably haven’t considered yet.

If you’re bored of the usual European city break destinations, North Macedonia’s capital is well worth a look.

Skopje is a city of contrasts. Ottoman architecture and winding streets give way to huge monuments and bustling squares, while mountains provide a dramatic backdrop wherever you go.

Spend your morning getting lost in the Old Bazaar, stop for traditional Macedonian food, then cross the Stone Bridge and explore the other side of the city. And when you’ve had enough of sightseeing, Skopje’s lively cafés, bars and restaurants give you plenty of reasons to stick around.

There’s also plenty beyond the city itself. A trip to Matka Canyon is a must, with towering cliffs, turquoise water and walking trails just outside Skopje.

Best of all? Skopje remains one of Europe’s more affordable city breaks, so you can experience plenty without blowing the budget.

Not your typical weekend away. And that’s exactly why we like it.

🍂 Looking for somewhere to experience autumn at its best?

Uppsala might be the answer.

As the leaves turn shades of gold, orange and red, Sweden’s fourth-largest city takes on a seriously cosy feel. Wander along the Fyris River, explore the grounds of one of Scandinavia’s oldest universities, or head into the city’s parks for an autumn stroll surrounded by colourful trees.

There’s plenty of history to discover too, from the striking Uppsala Cathedral to Uppsala Castle, while the compact centre is packed with independent cafés, bakeries and restaurants that are ideal for escaping the autumn chill.

And despite feeling like a proper Scandinavian getaway, Uppsala is surprisingly easy to reach. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is less than 40 minutes away by train, making it an easy addition to a trip to Sweden.

So, if crisp mornings, colourful streets, cinnamon buns and cosy cafés sound like your kind of autumn, put Uppsala on your list. 🇸🇪🍁
