6 June 1944: D-Day

On this day in 1944, Allied forces crossed the Channel and began the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.

It was the largest seaborne invasion in history, and its story was shaped by planning, deception and difficult decisions, with people asked to carry out something unimaginable.

We recently visited Chartwell, Winston Churchill’s pre and postwar home and it is a fascinating insight into the personal life of the man behind the mission and whose public role became inseparable from Britain’s wartime story.

Packed with personal touches there are powerful reminders of what was achieved on the beaches of Normandy. The most poignant being a relief map of Arromanches otherwise known as Gold Beach.

The detailed model hanging on the wall of his office shows the mulberry harbour there that was one of Churchill’s proudest achievements, building a harbour where no harbour existed.

Churchill had long believed this problem had to be solved: how do you invade Europe without first capturing a major port? The Mulberry Harbour was the answer.

Famously he demonstrated the concept to a scientific advisor with a loofah while in the bath and it really resonates to see how the model took pride of place in his office, especially how what became known as Port Winston allowed millions of soldiers and supplies to land after D-Day.

It helped turn a beachhead into a foothold, and a landing into a liberation campaign.

All in all it is a special experience to learn about this incredible endeavour and on this day to pay tribute to those who served, crossed the Channel, and never came home.

BEF EVACUATED

The message sent on 2 June 1940, marking the end of the main Dunkirk evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force.

Returning again to collect more French troops, in all more than 338,000 Allied troops were brought back across the Channel — not a victory in the usual sense, but an extraordinary act of rescue, endurance and organisation.

The operation, known as Operation Dynamo, was directed from the wartime tunnels beneath Dover Castle, where Vice-Admiral Bertram Ramsay and his team helped coordinate the evacuation under immense pressure.

Dunkirk is rightly remembered for the “little ships”, but the story also belongs to the planners, signal teams, naval staff, dock workers, soldiers, sailors and civilians who turned a desperate retreat into one of Britain’s defining wartime moments.

Today, Dover Castle is one of the most powerful places to understand that story — not just as a fortress on the cliffs, but as a command centre where history was made underground, against the clock.

Today in Burford and Swinbrook, we stepped into the world of the infamous Mitford sisters — the aristocratic family whose glamour, scandals, politics and rivalries inspired the TV drama Outrageous.

Swinbrook’s quiet churchyard is where several of the sisters are buried, including the legendary Nancy Mitford, author of The Pursuit of Love. It’s hard to imagine that these peaceful Cotswold villages were once at the centre of some of Britain’s most talked-about society stories.

From literary icons to political rebels, the Mitfords lived lives that still fascinate generations later — and now their story is captivating audiences all over again on screen.
