This is Positano, the most photographed village on the Amalfi Coast, where pastel-coloured houses and hotels cascade down near-vertical cliffs to a small harbour on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its distinctive majolica-tiled dome, anchors the centre of the town and has been a landmark on this coastline since the 13th century.

The Amalfi Coast stretches approximately 50 kilometres along the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula in Campania and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Positano itself was a significant maritime power in the 10th and 11th centuries before declining in importance - it remained a quiet fishing village until the mid-20th century, when writers including John Steinbeck helped bring it to international attention.

Fun fact: Despite its reputation as one of Italy's most glamorous destinations, Positano has a permanent population of just under 4,000 people. The town has no flat ground - virtually every building is connected by steep staircases rather than roads, and the primary means of moving goods through the village has historically been by donkey or on foot.

Via Krupp is the famous serpentine pathway cut into the limestone cliffs of Capri, switchbacking down the southern face of the island towards the sea. Built in 1902 by German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp, who had fallen in love with the island, it remains one of the most dramatic coastal walkways in the Mediterranean. Each turn revealing a different angle of the turquoise water below.

Capri is a small island of approximately 10 square kilometres sitting in the Gulf of Naples, off the southern tip of the Sorrentine Peninsula. Attracting visitors since the Roman times, Emperor Augustus visited in 29 BC and was so captivated that he traded the larger island of Ischia with the city of Naples in exchange for it. His successor Tiberius later built twelve villas on the island and ruled the Roman Empire from Capri for the last decade of his life.

Fun fact: The Blue Grotto, a sea cave on Capri's northern coast, was known to the Romans as a swimming hole for the Emperor Tiberius. It was forgotten for centuries before being rediscovered by a German artist in 1826. The cave's intense blue light is caused by sunlight passing through an underwater cavity, illuminating the water from below.

This is the Quartieri Spagnoli - the Spanish Quarter - one of the oldest and most characterful neighbourhoods in Naples, a dense grid of narrow streets running beneath the slopes of the Sant'Elmo hill. Naples was founded by Greek settlers around 600 BC, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Naples for over 400 years and was one of the largest cities in the world by the 18th century. The historic centre - Centro Storico - follows the original Greek street grid laid down over 2,500 years ago and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

Fun fact: Naples is widely credited as the birthplace of pizza. The Margherita - topped with tomato, mozzarella and basil - was created here in 1889, reportedly in honour of Queen Margherita of Savoy. Neapolitan pizza has been granted Traditional Speciality Guaranteed status by the European Union, with strict rules governing its preparation and ingredients.

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is known simply as the Duomo, dominating the city's skyline. The distinctive terracotta dome was engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi between 1420 and 1436 and remains the largest brick dome ever constructed - a feat of Renaissance engineering that had no precedent at the time and has not been replicated since. Giotto's Campanile, the ornate bell tower to the right, was begun in 1334.

Florence served as the cultural and financial capital of Renaissance Italy, and the streets around the Duomo have been at the centre of European civilisation for over five centuries. The cathedral's green, white and pink marble facade, completed in the 19th century, draws millions of visitors each year, but the building has been the spiritual heart of the city since its consecration in 1436.

🇮🇹 Fun fact: Brunelleschi's dome was built without the use of scaffolding from the ground - a completely novel approach at the time. He invented entirely new hoisting machines and construction techniques to complete it, many of which remained in use for centuries afterwards. The dome weighs approximately 37,000 tonnes and contains over 4 million bricks.
