She was called a witch.
That single word was enough to turn women into outsiders. To dismiss their knowledge, silence their voices and justify cruelty against them.
Joan Wytte, remembered as the “Fighting Fairy Woman of Bodmin”, was known as a healer and clairvoyant. In 1813, she died inside Bodmin Gaol. Even after death, she was denied dignity, with her remains later displayed as a curiosity before finally being laid to rest in 1998.
Her story is not folklore. It is a story of imprisonment, exploitation and the consequences of reducing a woman to a label.
This September, Season of the Witch confronts the persecution of women throughout history and asks why the image of the witch has so often been used to vilify those who challenged expectations, possessed knowledge or simply refused to conform.
