CELTIC DEEPS FRIDAY FUN

Friday saw Roger Bradbury out for a day on the sharks. Sadly the weather has cancelled the first planned day but it was looking promising for day 2…

It was a bumpy ride out in the left over swells but soon overcame the lumps and bumps to get out to the shark grounds.

Once the chum was in the water Roger got started with setting up his gear for the day. He only managed to get one rod in the water as soon as the kettle had boiled the reel was taking off with a nice blue to get things started. He kindly offered Luke Evans to get a rod set up and join the action. Never needing to be asked twice Luke was soon joining the fun.

The action was pretty much non stop all day. We struggled to finish a cup of tea or coffee before it was fish on again. No pics of fish as with only the 2 of us did on board it’s a bit tricky to leader and photograph at the same time, but a few action shots of Roger on the blue dog and some light gear 🙂 Most fish in the 70-90lb region, a few over a ton and some smaller, great sport to be had. We ended up with around 30 fish for the day with plenty more waiting to be caught.

We were also able to witness crazy numbers of chum grazing blues next to the boat. There were 11 around the boat and chum buckets at once! Great to see so many fish about.

No more trips on the weekend as it was a day off, getting scrubbed up for a wedding…. Well at least Emma Evans scrubbed up well 🤣

Wow where has 8 year gone! From fishing on Odyssey out of Cardiff, Swansea and Milford for all kinds of fish including getting to grips with the various monsters of the Celtic deeps before making the big jump of “going pro” and entering the world of charter fishing. She’s had some cracking fish, a heap of smiles and some great memories.

Today Odyssey joined Ocean Odyssey on the posh pontoon for her last charter with us, heading offshore on the reefs while Ocean Odyssey went out to the Celtic Deeps. She'll be off on her next adventure very soon. We will be sad to see her go as she was the start of it all for us but looking forward to the next chapter.

Spaces Thursday 27th August - Shark and Tuna

Based on the current forecast there is a weather window on Thursday 27th August before the weather appears to take a turn.

CELTIC DEEPS HOTS UP! 🎣🎣🦈🦈🐟🐟

It was a breezy weekend on the water but that didn’t stop the fish playing ball!

Friday saw Ocean Odyssey heading out to the deeps where the eager crew managed to pull in well over 25 blues. Including another fish which was previously tagged for NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic. After many years of tagging and not seeing any tagged fish they seem to be like buses with 3 in 2 weeks!

Saturday and Sunday, it was back to the battle of the boats. Emma Evans on Odyssey and Luke Evans on Ocean Odyssey. Both crews had a great day out with lots of fish. However it was Emma took the title with most fish for Saturday so once again she keeps the title but plenty of time for Luke to win it back…

Sunday both boats were back out the deeps. Still plenty of blues along with a few promising signs of tuna.

After Ocean Odyssey anglers had a few each we upped lines and had an hour on the tuna. Plenty of large fish busting in multiple busts along with birds working amongst the tuna and dolphins added to the wildlife spectacle. The shout of FISH ON! Came twice but sadly the fish escaped both times. We only had an hour on the fish but it’s promising signs for future trips.

A huge shout out to the crews for fishing hard in some rough conditions but they were rewarded to some great fishing 🙂 🎣 🦈🐟

TAG UPDATE!

We just had exciting news back from NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic about the blue shark recaptured on 19th July by Jamie McTighe on Odyssey.

It turns out she was initially released on the 30th July 2025, and travelled 105 nm north to the Celtic Deeps, so not far off a year apart. What's also interesting is that the recapture we had late last year was tagged only a week or so before this one and from the same area.

To top it off! We were thrilled last weekend to recapture our 3rd blue shark in 12 months. We haven't calculated the odds of that happening but we thought two in that short time was crazy enough. This time was with Luke on Ocean Odyssey and the tag wasn't from NOAA! but an Irish one. We're currently trying to contact the right people to find out more.

FISHING ALL THE MARKS 🎣🐟🐠🦈

Catching up from a busy long weekend, there was an invasion of Scots which joined us for a long weekend fishing and enjoyed the variety we have to offer. David and friends spent Saturday hitting the Smalls on the Pollack, mackerel and Scad. Sharking on Sunday and on the Huss and Tope on Monday. They also managed some rays, weevers and plenty of dogfish.

Along with a variety of fishing, the crew enjoyed the vast wildlife display of pods of fin whales, and a Minkie whale. We were treated to plenty of dolphins and the tuna made their way up the chum slick but sadly no takes (probably a good thing given we were using shark gear). We had plenty of blues to give the guys a good workout.

Monday was spent inshore with some great action on the huss. Sadly only the one tope. Huge numbers of bait fish inshore probably didn't help us.

On Sunday, Odyssey headed to the reefs for a successful day on the Pollack, Mackerel and Skad whilst also enjoying the company of family dolphins including young, chilling out and enjoying now riding whilst we reset our drift.

The POLLACK & BLUES🎣🐟

Monday and Tuesday were spent on St Govan's Sholes and around the Islands. They were slower days but with fish showing on the bottom, the crew worked to bring the 8 different species to the boat.

Emma, John and Ali headed offshore on Thursday and Friday to the Hats and Barrels for Pollacking. There was a cracking good stamp of fish in good numbers on every drift caught on light gear and Sidewinder Lures . Emma had to dash between pouring the coffee to unhooking Pollack. The vast majority of fish were returned for another day.

Whilst Odyssey was enjoying the Pollacking, Ocean was drifting for Blues and the hope of Porgies. Sadly, it seems we could be at the end of the prolonged Porgie season but it's been a great one.

The conditions particularly yesterday, were stunning, with great visibility of inshore from the reefs. There were small pods of dolphins with tiny baby dolphins 🐬 and big bait balls with gannets and other sea birds working. A great end to a week's fishing.

CRACKING WEEKEND ON THE SHARKS 🎣🦈🔥

Welsh Porgies have been in since June and usually they are gone by now but they're still here in more numbers that normal and on the larger side alongside some lovely blues.

On Saturday, Luke, was joined by Spencer, David and Ali on the sharks. Ali came to observe for the day and learn about tagging sharks as part of her Masters Degree and we were happy to help. She soon got to grips in tagging some blues for NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic It was great to showcase how angling can support science. David and Spencer had some great shark action with plenty of blues and another porgie to add to Lukes tally.

Sunday saw both boats heading out. Plenty of blues again. Another 2 porgies to Lukes boat. A lovely 180lb fish and another of 250-300lb. He had her boatside and leadered, but the hook pulled before she could smile for the camera.

It was Emma's boat who stole the show...
Jade joined us for her first shark trip so she was up first. Within half hour of dropping the chum bucket over the side, the reel started screaming and brought a 30lb blue to the boat, a nice start to the day. Around lunch time more blues were brought to the boat ranging from 60-80lb. When 2 baits were nabbed, one rod was rebaited and dropped back in the water, and whilst the second was being prepared the first reel took off to Ireland. Lee was up next, and we thought this must be a big fish. It was just taking line after line. Lee was gaining a little and it kept saying nope! She sulked off the back of the boat just there calmly not budging all whilst Lee's arms were burning at this point after 15 mins. The rod was past over to Danny who was surprised by the strength of the fish, that is was hard to get a turn on her and slowly she came closer to the boat. That was when she headed to the bottom of the deeps and would not budge and that's when the rod was past to Aled - no pressure! And she started to come up and closer. It was a full boat team effort to bring her to the boat and she shocked us with her size, estimated at 400lb.

Once released boat side, we needed a breather before dropping the lines back in for a few more good sized blues before we were all puffed out.

It is safe to say the Celtic Deeps continues to produce some awesome fishing and we've not started our tuna season yet... 🦈🎣🐟
