WRASSE-TASTIC

When your phone has more photos of fish than your husband ... but not quite as much as your dog 🤣🤭

We love our sharks, but by now you'll know we love anything that swims in the sea.

These Ballan Wrasse were caught recently on light spinning rods with fixed spool reels on two different soft plastics from Sidewinder Lures First4Fishing around the Smalls Lighthouse whilst Pollocking - my favourite fish on lures and lots of fun.

FOGGY FRIDAY

With visibility down to 100m, running on radar on and a steady speed down the haven. We headed to find some fresh bait for a day out the deeps. Thankfully the fog cleared on the shark grounds as Luke Evans was worried we wouldn't see the floats! 😶‍🌫️

We were soon into the fish with a nice steady day, everyone getting fish. 5 new shark converts made with the biggest and first for Jack going 140lb+ (maybe bigger, a very chunky fish) to celebrate his birthday. Great day out as ever with a happy crew. 🦈 🦈

WEEKEND ROUND UP PART 2 (LURE ADDITION)

So after battle of the boats on Sunday Luke Evans was out on a reefing session on Monday. A chance to and steal a few fish off Emma Evans favourite marks..

With a big spring tide the plan was to fish a few inshore marks to see what was about before before potentially moving offshore to get some more action when the tide eased. Inshore the fishing was quiet with not much on showing on the sounder. The crew still managed a few pollack and mackerel but not in the numbers we were hoping for.

Luke made the call to head offshore so Ocean Odyssey soon had 600hp purring as she headed out at nice 22knts. Having a decent turn of speed allows us to make the most of the fishing time, especially when it’s hard to find decent numbers.

As soon as the the lines went down the whole boat was into fish. Mainly mackerel, scad and a few nice pollack. After suggesting folks swap over to soft plastics to avoid the smaller fish, it soon played off with multiple pollack coming in. Sidewinder Lures from First4Fishing doing the buisness! With a 30g spinning rod, a light lead and some soft plastics soon gave great sport. If you’ve not tried it, it’s a lot of fun and the fish are easily returned.

The crew had loads of fish, most in the 5-6lb class. The skipper even managed to bag one or 2 on a drift on SPJ gear 🙂 (he’s still got the knack 😉 )

We ended up with Pollack, mackerel, scad, pouting, cod, bass and a lone starfish.

Thanks to Jim and the crew for a top day out and Kudos to Charlotte for being best angler on the day 🙂

WEEKEND ROUND UP PART 1 (BATTLE OF THE BOATS!)

FRIDAY
We had steady action throughout the day, with double figure number of blues, John with his first blue of 80 lb. The highlight of the day was the cutest baby blue following Lloyd Davies bait to the surface. It refused any bait with a hook in it but would happily eat up Morrisons finest trout in small pieces! A nice stamp of fish but no pics as Luke forgot to charge his phone up...

SUNDAY
Luke Evans started the day looking for tuna. He managed to drop the team on some fish who were soon into a Tuna hook up on popping gear. Despite some screaming runs, the fish got away. As it's still early season on the Tuna, they continued on to hunt some blues and convert some shark virgins. Some nice fish coming in with 2 over the 100lb mark. 🐟🎣

Despite spending several years learning the ropes with Luke, Emma Evans headed out on Odyssey to the deeps for her first solo shark trip. Within the first hour we were 3 first in, and then over lunch time we had a quiet spell. Once again the brews brought the fish as when 1 o'clock came the blues just kept coming. Whilst unhooking one fish, one line screened after another. It was mad! With 17 sharks to the boat ranging from 50-110 lb it was only when the lines came in to go home did they stop coming. 🦈

Big thanks to Steve, Grant Bath and Gareth Jones for a cracking start to my sharking career. Round 1 to Emma! 😉

HAKE OF A DAY! 🐟🎣

Another cracking day on the water with a party from SCBI - Sportfishing Club of the British Isles , chasing some Welsh sharks. Having heard all the tales of Marlin and various spectacular catches from overseas, there was a concern that Wales might be a little tame in comparison. Fortunately this didn't appear to be the case and the Celtic Deeps showcased what it has to offer the keen angler!

We saw some tuna activity on the way out to the shark grounds but not really enough to tempt us away from the plan of chasing the blues.

After a quiet first hour while the chum got to work Luke Evans was busy on the Whiting rod for fresh bait and landed a lovely 9.5lb Hake, so he was one very happy skipper with a new PB!

The sharks came on the feed and it was pretty constant all day with 16 to the boat and a few more dropped. Best fish going 120lb+ and others around the 100lb mark.

A cameo of a fin whale doing circles around the boat added to the majesty of the deeps with Dolphins and the odd tuna passing under the boat to say hi.

Smiles all round, a shark virgin converted, more tags away for NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic and a great crew made for another awesome day on the water!

WELSH TUNA LICENSES!

Today the Welsh Tuna fleet received their licences and we're pleased to say both Ocean Odyssey and Ocean have theirs too.

We'll hopefully have another productive season enjoying the world class fishing that can be found off the Welsh coast.

As we did last year, we will continue to run Shark, Tuna and Mixed trips, so if you'd like to change your trip to mixed, just drop us a message.

Both boats will continue to carry full sets of Tuna gear to be ready for any opportune moment to jump in on the action.

In terms of tactics, Odyssey will focus on drift fishing with live and dead baits and trolling for Tuna and is suitable smaller parties who want to cruise in comfort. Ocean Odyssey will do similar, but will also offer popping and jigging for experienced anglers with their own gear. She's perfect for this due to her island wheelhouse and level deck giving all round access.

CELTIC DEEPS ON FIRE! 🔥 🎣🦈

Another busy weekend out the deeps. Saturday saw Luke Evans heading out in some bouncy conditions but the super keen crew were soon in on the action, landing 17-18 blues. After Alex had 1-2 fish, he switched over to his fly rod, and caught multiple blues, the best over 100lb. It look a lot of skill to get it in on such sporting tackle. 🦈

We had the deeps to ourselves on Sunday with returning customers on the fish, hooking up 8 sharks between them. It's great to have another shark convert with Ronnie bagging his first two fish. After last week's success on the Hake, Steve tried his best to bag one, but he still managed to beat Luke who had more success with the birds 🐦.

A good number of shark were tagged over the course of the weekend for NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic .

Emma Evans has now graduated from shark school, doing a great job of leadering and wrestling blues. She'll be running several short notice trips later this year along with tuna now that they're beginning to show and it won't be long before Welsh licenses are issued. We're looking forward to seeing who lands the first Welsh Tuna of 2025.

BIG & SMALL... we love them all!

Whilst Odyssey spent the day hoping around the haven for species yesterday, Ocean headed straight to the deeps after for 10-15 mins pausing for some extra fresh bait fish. Luke and the guys put it to good use with 18-19 blues, maybe more to 110 lb 🦈🙈.

The guys had the surprise of a lovely Hake whilst bait fishing for Whiting off the bottom. It was too big for shark bait but perfect size for the pan. Skipper was very happy later when offered to take it home for dinner. 🥣🍴

With today's inshore wave height at 2.5 metres and 3-4 metres offshore at 5.8 second periods, restocking of chum, rigs, reefing gear and much heavier gear has been underway in anticipation of the long awaited species that is now showing in the deeps.

SHARKTASTIC

Weekend round up part 2:

With beautiful conditions for 3 days, it'd be rude not to head out to the deeps. Friday saw an early start as Hans and his crew headed out in near mirror seas - not the best conditions for sharking but we managed to get plenty of action with 9 to the boat up to 120lb. A beautiful ride home in warm sunshine.

Saturday was the turn of Jim Benfield and his crew to head out. A quieter day but still found some fish. It was a beautiful evening so Emma Evans decided to show Luke Evans how to catch some bait after we found a small shoal of mackerel.

The fresh bait paid off as the guys had a frantic day on the sharks getting in excess of 20 to the boat, with plenty more bumping the floats and chum bucket all day. Emma was on leadering duties all day and doing a great job of wrestling sharks, making the chum and running the boat. Luke was on tea duty!

Fantastic fishing for all 3 days and great crews made for a grest couple of days and hopefully we'll be back out soon to find some more!

We've now ran out of our stock of shark tags but hopefully will be back out tagging for NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic and continue our swabbing for Pat Smith Database.
