You know that thing you say every year… “Next Christmas, we’re definitely doing the markets in Europe”?
If it’s been on your list for ages, a Christmas market river cruise is one of the easiest ways to finally make it happen.
Here’s why I’m such a fan. You unpack once, then the scenery and the cities come to you. No juggling train times. No dragging a case over cobbles. No trying to work out whether your next hotel is near the station or near the old town. You wake up somewhere new, wander the markets, then head back to a warm cabin and a proper meal. It turns the whole trip into something that feels calm, not chaotic.
I did a river cruise with my mum, and it’s still one of my favourite ways we’ve travelled together. It had that lovely rhythm to it: mornings watching the river roll by, afternoons exploring, evenings chatting over dinner without rushing off to the next place. It’s festive, but it’s also genuinely relaxing.
From the options in the pictures, the one I’d point you towards is the 4-day Enchanting Rhine in Germany. Not because it’s “short” (although that helps if you can’t spare a full week), but because it gives you a proper hit of Christmas atmosphere without feeling like a marathon. The Rhine towns at that time of year are made for this. Think glowing old streets, markets that feel traditional rather than touristy, and that cosy, wintry feeling you can’t recreate from a weekend flying in and out of one city.
If you’re tempted, this is where I’m useful. Some people want the classic markets and an easy pace. Others want more time ashore, or a more premium feel. It’s not one-size-fits-all, even when the route sounds similar.
