It’s ideal for couples, friends and solo travellers who want culture by day and cocktails by night. Top tip: book a night-time river cruise, pack comfy shoes for all the cobbles, and don’t leave without trying chimney cake and a soak in Széchenyi Baths.

Best time to go: spring and autumn for lighter crowds and gorgeous sunsets… and with 2 flights a week from Newcastle to Budapest until the end of March, it’s super easy to escape for a few nights.

Top 5 things to do:

Real Alcázar: Moorish arches, cool courtyards and lush gardens.
Giralda & Cathedral: climb for those big skyline views.
Barrio Santa Cruz: lose yourself in narrow lanes and tapas spots.
Plaza de España: come for golden hour and people‑watching in the park.
Triana: cross the river for flamenco, ceramics and a glass of something cold by the water.

Best time to go? March to May or late September to early November for warm days, softer heat and a more relaxed feel.
