A leopard up a tree. Lion feasting on a kill. Hippo. A tower of giraffe. A pack of wild dog. And a pangolin, a mostly nocturnal animal, in broad daylight at Lion Sands.

Robyn’s safari began at Kruger Shalati, the train on the bridge. Glass-walled carriages, a pool on the deck, and the Sabie River below, where crocodile, hippo, buffalo and elephant come to drink.

The exceptional guiding at Lion Sands found the pangolin. A hyena caught the guide’s attention, leading to the sighting a guide dreams about.

Tuningi Safari Lodge in Madikwe Game Reserve, an elephant walked past the hide at eye level. Robyn watched the elephant drink and bathe up close, unaware she was there.

Meet Madagascar’s most charming locals
Lemurs are native to Madagascar, and which species you meet depends on where you go.

In the eastern rainforest of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, listen for the indri. The largest living lemur stands over a metre tall, and its call carries for over a mile through the canopy like whale song.

In the south, Verreaux’s sifaka at Berenty Reserve bounds across open ground with its arms raised, earning it the name dancing sifaka. Ring-tailed lemurs share the reserve. The males hold “stink fights”. They rub scent from their wrist glands onto their tails and waft it at rivals. Females lead their troops, and in Isalo National Park they move through the canyons in groups of up to 30.

The drier months, April to October, are easiest for trekking the forests, though you can see lemurs year-round.

Whale watching season on the Western Cape
From August to October, the southern right whale returns to the Western Cape to calve after a journey of thousands of kilometres from the Southern Ocean.

Hermanus is two hours from Cape Town. The Cliff Path puts you above whales breaching close to shore, with a busy town and excellent restaurants a short walk away. Gansbaai suits guests who’d rather be on the water, with boat trips that take you past Dyer Island’s African penguin colony and an abundance of whale species. False Bay slots easily into a Cape Town stay, just a short drive to the whale-watching hotspots of Kalk Bay and Simon’s Town. For guests who want whales, wilderness, and the sound of the surf, De Hoop is a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town. Pale sand, fynbos on the hills, and mothers and calves lolling in the sheltered bays. At Lekkerwater, you can watch them from your bed.

Tanzania and Zanzibar just got easier
From summer 2027, British Airways will fly from Gatwick to Kilimanjaro and home from Zanzibar, making it easier to combine a Tanzania safari with time on the coast without retracing your steps.

Start in the far north of the Serengeti National Park at Lamai, set on Kogakuria Kopje among a tumble of giant boulders. Over a million wildebeest cross these plains on their annual migration, and from July to October the Mara River crossings are a short drive away.

Then up to the exclusive Entamanu Private, right on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. From the rim, you look down into the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and back across the Serengeti plains teeming with wildlife such as lions, elephants, hippos, and cheetahs. Back on the rim, you can walk the highlands with Maasai scouts, visit a neighbouring Maasai village, and watch the light go over sundowners.

Fly direct to Zanzibar. White Sand Villas on Paje beach is another favourite, with kayaking and stand-up paddleboards, a kitesurfing centre, a sauna and steam room, and a rooftop lounge for end-of-day cocktails.
The route runs one way. British Airways flies in via Kilimanjaro and home from Zanzibar, and if you'd like to climb Kilimanjaro first, we can add that too.

A lion called Tripod, a ride on the Elephant Express, a breeding herd of elephant drinking a few feet from an underground hide, and a walk among white rhino. That's just a small snapshot of the moments our guests brought home from a family safari in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, as they marked their 25th wedding anniversary.

The scenic route: 4,126km across Zambia.
It's the longest movement ever recorded for an African mammal. A trio of wild dog left Kafue National Park within a fortnight of each other in 2025, each heading off to find mates and a territory of their own, by April 2026 they'd reached the Luangwa Valley.

Scott Creel, who led the study, has watched wild dogs since 1991 and didn't expect the result: most critical populations in Eastern and Southern Africa probably remain connected. This makes the corridors between the parks especially valuable.

The three brothers went east, up, and down the Great Rift Valley escarpment, over rivers and roads, around the edges of Kabwe, Kitwe and Ndola. The straight line from start to finish is much shorter than the distance they actually covered. A pack can cover that kind of ground, which is why a sighting is so hard to plan, and that’s what good guiding does: it knows the packs, the dens, and the season. Kwetsani has reopened, and the treehouse feel remains
Five suites and a large family suite sit among palm, fig and mangosteen trees in the Jao Reserve, linked by timber walkways. Reopened in June 2026 after a complete rebuild, the raised canvas-and-wood suites keep their treehouse feel, with open-fronted rooms and expansive decks.

The surrounding floodplains attract red lechwe and buffalo, and when the floodwaters peak, boating and mokoro excursions take centre stage. Take the boat to Hunda Island, the Jao Reserve's main area of permanently dry ground. Elephant, kudu, giraffe, and other savannah species are drawn there when the Delta is mostly water. Our travel expert Francis thinks the Jao Reserve is one of the most beautiful parts of the Okavango Delta.

The lions of BBC's Kingdom have new kings
A few days ago in South Luangwa, guests watched one male lion turn on another mid-courtship, fighting for the right to mate with a lioness.

Both are newcomers to the Nsefu Pride, the lions BBC's Kingdom filmed.

For years, this was one of the park's most settled prides: two Mtanda males, eight lionesses and six youngsters. This season, the cubs have grown into subadults, several lionesses have returned to oestrus, and the pride has split. The Mtanda males have moved across the river, and three unfamiliar males have taken their place.

One lioness is already pregnant. Will the new males stay long enough to see any cubs through to adulthood? South Luangwa is watching.

Nsefu Camp sits on a sweeping meander of the Luangwa River, in the sector that gives the pride its name. Zambia's first safari camp, it's now a protected national monument, with six chalets overlooking the river, plus wildlife drives, night drives, and walking safaris.

Sixty-something and about to try kitesurfing for the first time
Alex spent four days on Diani Beach, Kenya, finding out whether new tricks really do have an age limit. With the warm Indian Ocean beneath him, the wind at his back and the patient team at H2O Kitesurfing School on hand, there was only one way to find out. Read his account of wobbly starts, plenty of wipeouts, a fair amount of Indian Ocean water up his nose, and the moment he finally stood up on the board.

Alphonse Island’s resident giants
Slip into the water off St François Atoll between September and May, and you'll have a fair chance of finding yourself alongside a manta ray, broad head tilted forward, its two horn-shaped fins unfurled to funnel plankton into its mouth. Alphonse Island sits at the edge of this world, and snorkelling and diving excursions regularly make the short crossing to the atoll, one of the finest places anywhere to meet these animals in open water.

Blue Safari records each encounter and uses guests' photographs to identify individual rays and track their movements, work that feeds directly into the team's ongoing manta research.

The atoll's cast doesn't stop there: synchronised manta feeding frenzies, hawksbill turtles nesting on the beaches, huge pods of spinner dolphins, schools of sailfish and bumphead parrotfish moving through the shallows. World-class fly-fishing completes this ultimate blue safari.
