What should a family of four realistically budget for an Easter holiday? 🐥

It’s one of the most important and sometimes most difficult, conversations to have when planning a trip.

Holiday pricing has changed considerably, and travelling during the school holidays brings an additional premium. Add direct flights, convenient departure times, separate sleeping areas, a higher board basis or a more complex itinerary, and the total can increase very quickly.

So, I’m starting a new series sharing realistic budget expectations for the key school-holiday periods, beginning with Easter and six of my most requested destinations for this time:
- Japan
- Thailand
- Sri Lanka
- Costa Rica
- South Africa
- The Maldives

The figures in this post are indicative starting points for a family of four travelling from London in Economy, with checked luggage and good-quality accommodation. They aren’t live quotations, and every family’s requirements will produce a slightly different price.

My intention isn’t to put anyone off or suggest that you need an unlimited budget. It’s to give you an honest starting point, explain where the money goes and help you decide which elements matter most.

Sometimes we can make a budget work harder by adjusting the dates, choosing an indirect flight, reducing the number of stops or mixing hotel standards. At other times, the requirements and budget simply don’t quite match and it might be a case of finding an alternative destination that will work for you.

Family holidays change enormously as children grow and the itinerary that works brilliantly with a baby probably won’t impress a teenager.

Travelling with children isn’t about abandoning culture, adventure or the destinations you really want to experience. It’s about planning the trip around the stage your family is actually at. That might mean fewer hotel changes with a baby, more flexibility with a toddler, hands-on experiences for younger children or giving teenagers some ownership over the plans.

The right flight times, room arrangements, transfers and pace can completely change how enjoyable a family holiday feels and they’re exactly the details I consider when creating a tailor-made family trip.

Where should you travel in October?
October is one of those quietly brilliant months to travel. Autumn colours are putting on a show in one part of the world, the dry season is beginning elsewhere, Europe still has pockets of sunshine and some destinations are hitting their sweet spot for adventure.

🇰🇭 Cambodia — The rains begin to ease, leaving the countryside incredibly lush and Angkor’s temples surrounded by greenery, with fewer visitors than during peak season.
🇧🇹 Bhutan — Clearer autumn weather, Himalayan views and excellent trekking conditions make October one of the loveliest times to explore this extraordinary mountain kingdom.
🇳🇵 Nepal — Peak trekking season for good reason: clearer skies, superb mountain visibility and some of the best conditions of the year for heading into the Himalayas.
🇿🇦 South Africa — Spring has arrived in the Cape, whales can still be spotted around Hermanus and it’s a fantastic month for combining Cape Town, the Winelands, Garden Route and safari.
🇲🇺 Mauritius — Warm, generally dry and sunny, with comfortable temperatures before the hotter and more humid summer months arrive. Brilliant for beach time with plenty to explore beyond it.
🇺🇸 New England — October brings the classic fall road trip: fiery foliage, pretty towns, scenic drives and crisp autumn days across states including Vermont and New Hampshire.
🇨🇾 Cyprus — One of my favourite options for squeezing out some late European sunshine, with warm seas, pleasant temperatures and considerably fewer visitors than in summer.
