If you've enjoyed walking tours around Kelham Island and Neepsend, then the local community group Kelham Island and Neepsend Community Alliance is one of the reasons the area is so good. They're currently fundraising to support their activities so do donate if you can.

It's gearing up to be another beautiful day in Kelham Island. And I'm getting ready for another history walking tour of the area starting at Kelham Island Museum (as I always remind people, it's free entry to the museum these days so make sure you include that in a visit to the area) and I have my obligatory pre-walk coffee from .

Did you know that Kelham Island was home to the oldest business in the UK still making wooden ladders? A great article about a historic business still going strong on Ebenezer Street.

Thoroughly enjoyed today's walk around Attercliffe with Mike Higginbottom. The walk told the story of the area by visiting a series of buildings that were a part of the area's development and that are part of the urban landscape of Attercliffe now. We also visited Zion Graveyard (thank you Penny) and the Don Valley Hotel. The next walk is 7 June

Last weekend I went on the first city centre walk from Calvin of Hidden Sheffield Walks. Excellent as always, and a great introduction to aspects of Sheffield's hidden history that you might not have noticed. He'll be repeating the walk each Sunday over the coming weeks.

It's looking set fair for Sunday's tour of the stories and places of the city centre. Full details in the event post below in the comments.

I will be repeating the tour every Sunday in May, with further details posted here soon. There is a PayPal link in the event post, otherwise cash payment welcome on the day. No booking is required - as the summer goes on I may need to introduce tickets in advance, but for now you are more than welcome to just turn up :)

All my tours last two hours and are priced at £10 per adult with accompanied children free.

Starting today and for the next few Sundays, Hidden Sheffield Walks will be running city centre walking tours, bringing to life the history at the heart of our city. Anyone who has been on Calvin's previous walks, including his famous 'drainspotting' walks, will already know how fascinating these will be. Book in advance or on the day. Follow the link in the comments on the story for more details.

On my city centre tour we start with a look at the Town Hall and the Peace Gardens. For nearly ninety years the gardens in various forms have been next to the Town Hall, however there was a much longer time when St Paul's Church was there instead - surrounded first by fields, then housing, before the current Town Hall was built in the 1890s.

Here is the church in the 1880s from Cross Burgess Street with the empty site soon to be built on by the Salvation Army on the left, and folk living where the Town Hall was to be constructed.
