Yesterday you may have been away of an Air Traffic Control failure.

Saying goodbye to Dubrovnik today after a fabulous three night stay. We stayed in Lapad which is a lovely suburb of the city and with its own buzzing restaurant scene and a really nice beach.

Personally I think it’s a better area to stay rather than the centre, as the old town is only 10 minutes by cab and there is enough space to have a pool and it felt like an oasis away from the busy centre.

Sunset beach in Lapad is a gorgeous location to watch the sunset from, and there are some high quality restaurants steps away from there and near the marina. If you’re getting a cruise we saw loads come and go too.

Dubrovnik itself is fabulous as well, and I can see why it’s so popular with tourists. It’s a beautiful medieval place with so many nooks and crannies to explore. We ate several wonderful meals and watched a gorgeous sunset at Buza bar. This is a great place to watch brave tourists and locals jump off the rocks into the sea, and my kids both wanted to join in - thankfully they didn’t as we were about to go for dinner!

I highly recommend this region for a city break or as part of a larger trip. I can easily incorporate Dubrovnik, Lapad and Cavtat with Montenegro (or not) into a tailor made itinerary for you.

We are on our way back to the border after a lovely few days in Herceg Novi.
We travelled from Budva to Herceg Novi via Portonovi, as I wanted to visit the One&Only hotel there, one of my favourite chains!

Sadly we couldn’t stretch our budget for us all to stay there, but they kindly invited us for a tour and a coffee.
It’s such a beautiful property and like the one in Athens Riviera it’s fitted out in a classical modern style. I love the way they both feel like very classy 70s properties but infinitely luxurious- taking you back to a wonderful era.
We had lunch in the nearby marina which is absolutely gorgeous.

We then travelled to nearby Herceg Novi where we stayed in an apartment for four nights. This was a wonderful base and we explored the area, ate in some fantastic restaurants and also took a boat trip to Kotor and Perast.

We had planned to visit Kotor by road, but the traffic around there was so bad and parking impossible that a boat trip was much easier!

Kotor and Perast are worth visiting though, and along with old town Herceg Novi are beautiful medieval style places with lots of interesting history. We loved the buildings and forts and mountain backdrops.

Montenegro is really beautiful and worth a visit. The border crossings from Dubrovnik are not too bad, especially if you go early or out of summer season making, it a great two centre or several centre destination like we did.

Prices are similar to Greece but Montenegro still feels quite un touristy (if you avoid Kotor especially!). In Herceg Novi, we were the only British tourists we encountered but everyone did speak English. I was particularly flattered when a waiter said I spoke great English!

There are very few American and international chains. No Starbucks or McDonald’s as far as we saw, only a couple of Burger Kings. The country feels more Eastern European than Croatia and you can see Cyrillic script on many signs. I loved how different Montenegro feels.

Definitely worth a visit.

As we leave Budva and get ready for the next stop of our adventure, I am contemplating the pros and cons of all inclusive hotels, in particular Iberostar Belleview where we stayed.

Pros - the kids love them, they enjoy the freedom to eat what they want, how many plates of it and as often as they like.
There are beautiful pools here and you don’t have to worry about anything other than which book to read first!
The rooms were decent but they did upgrade us to sea view garden rooms which were lovely and well positioned.
Staff are lovely and eager to please and I was offered around 5 site inspections by different people.
Location was good, right next to Budva and 20 mins from the old town. We also did an evening excursion to beautiful Sveti Stefan, a 10 minute drive away. The hotel has free parking too which is a huge bonus.

Cons - the food is very samey and I really am not a huge fan of the same buffet every night. This hotel desperately needs some à la carte options.
Entertainment is a bit hit and miss and drinks are pretty poor quality.
They charge for loungers on the beach which I find odd, as it’s attached to the hotel but I’ve seen this before in other countries.

However - it’s very cheap, so as a base for four nights not the worst place to stay at all. Just maybe eat out occasionally and explore the local area!

Onwards now to our next stop in Montenegro with a stop in Portonovi on the way!
