Shakespeare’s Birthday🎭

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1564. While the exact date of his birth was never recorded, it is traditionally celebrated on 23 April, a date shared with his passing in 1616 at the age of 52.

A legacy that continues to shape literature, language, and storytelling across the world.

“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ’em.”

Holy Trinity Church, The Avenue

The principal path leading from the Old Town Gate to the North Porch is lined with lime trees, thoughtfully arranged to carry symbolic meaning. Twelve trees stand on the left, along the river side, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, while twelve on the right represent the twelve apostles. One tree on the right is set slightly back, signifying the casting out of Judas.

Stratford-upon-Avon, along the River Avon

The river is bustling with life, boats drifting steadily along the water, with the spire of Holy Trinity Church rising gently above the trees, as seen from Tramway Bridge.

A favourite perspective, following the gentle curve of the River Avon, with the Shakespeare Theatre tower rising beyond, viewed from the peaceful grounds of Holy Trinity Church.

Clopton House Tower stands at the top of the first hill as you approach the Welcombe Hills from Maidenhead Road.

An architectural folly, the tower has become a familiar landmark above Stratford-upon-Avon, marking the start of one of the area’s most accessible walks. In early spring, blossom begins to soften the foreground, while the elevated position offers open views back across the town and surrounding countryside.

Springtime among the thatched cottages of Shottery.

A small historic district just west of Stratford-upon-Avon, once a quiet hamlet and home to Anne Hathaway's Cottage, the childhood home of Anne Hathaway.

This is the time of year when gardens begin to wake again — fresh green lawns, daffodils in bloom, blossom in the hedgerows, and the soft light of warm spring afternoons.

"April hath put a spirit of youth in everything."
— William Shakespeare
