One tiny puffling is giving conservationists a reason to celebrate 🩵
For the first time in 30 years, a baby puffin has been spotted on the Dorset coast of southern England, offering new hope for one of the country's last remaining mainland puffin colonies. Volunteers spent weeks monitoring the nesting site before finally catching a glimpse of the young bird emerging from its rocky crevice.
The colony has declined dramatically over the decades, from about 80 nesting birds in the 1950s to just a handful of breeding pairs today. Conservationists say a single chick won't save the colony, but it's an encouraging sign that the birds can still successfully hatch and raise young while researchers work to better understand the challenges they face.
