✨Borneo is the world’s third-largest island, covering around 287,000 square miles—bigger than the UK and Ireland combined!
✨The island is shared by three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia (where it’s called Kalimantan), and the tiny nation of Brunei.
✨Mount Kinabalu is Borneo’s highest peak, standing at 13,455 feet (4,095 metres)—a favourite for adventurous climbers.
✨Borneo’s rainforest is one of the oldest in the world, estimated to be around 130 million years old.
✨The island is home to the orangutan, whose name means “person of the forest.” Wild orangutans can only be found in Borneo and Sumatra.
✨Borneo boasts nearly 11,000 species of flowering plants, with about a third found nowhere else on Earth.
✨In just 16 acres of Borneo’s lowland forest, scientists have recorded over 700 different species of trees—more than in the whole of North America!
✨The island is a haven for rare wildlife, including the Bornean pygmy elephant, the proboscis monkey, and the critically endangered Eastern Sumatran rhino.
