EVERYONE REMEMBERS WHERE THEY WERE…

Where were you when you heard about 9/11?

Today marks 25 years since the attacks of September 11th, 2001 — one of those moments when most of us can remember exactly where we were.

I certainly can. I was in Sorrento, Italy, staying in a hotel with hundreds of American tourists. I will never forget the shock, disbelief and emotion of those around me as we watched events unfold thousands of miles away.

For the travel world, 9/11 changed aviation and the way we travel forever. But today isn’t about travel — it’s about remembering the people.

Nearly 3,000 lives were lost, and countless others changed forever.

FAMILIARISE FRIDAYS 👋

Following on from last Friday’s post, where I introduced myself so that my customers can understand and appreciate a little more about the person they’re dealing with, this week I thought I’d focus on the town I live in and how I arrived here – Royal Tunbridge Wells.

Back in 2003, after 35 years living in Essex, I was ready for a new adventure. After visiting a few different towns, my partner at the time and I decided to settle in Royal Tunbridge Wells.

And what a great choice it turned out to be.

Tunbridge Wells is a beautiful and historic town, famous for The Pantiles, its Georgian architecture and its history as a fashionable spa town. It also has excellent links into London, which was particularly important to me at the time.

I had spent over 30 years working as a Lloyd’s insurance broker with various companies, and living in Tunbridge Wells meant I could continue commuting into the City.

But eventually my priorities began to change.

I wanted to be closer to my son and play a proper part in his upbringing. The long City hours and daily commute simply weren’t going to give me the time I wanted with him.

So I needed a change of direction.

And that’s where travel came to my rescue.

Travel was something I had always loved, so turning that passion into a business seemed like the perfect next chapter.

I’ve now been running Go Scoble for nine years, helping other people experience the places, adventures and memories that have made travel such an important part of my own life.

So Tunbridge Wells hasn’t just been the place I’ve called home since 2003 – it has played a huge part in changing the direction of my life.

And I’m very pleased it did.

🇮🇸 FLASHBACK THURSDAY 🇮🇸

Iceland — February 2024 ❄️

I’ve always wanted to visit Iceland and Reykjavík, but I’ve always been more of a fan of summer holidays and tended to prioritise them. However, in February 2024, we decided to take the plunge, head to Reykjavík in the middle of winter — and we certainly weren’t disappointed!

We stayed right in the centre of Reykjavík at the beautiful Hotel Borg, which was absolutely perfect for what we needed. Great rooms, a fantastic location and a breakfast to die for!

February meant limited daylight, but that was all part of the experience. There was something magical about walking around Reykjavík at 10 o’clock in the morning when it was still pitch black, with snow on the ground and the city’s wonderfully diverse architecture all around us.

One building you simply cannot miss is the incredible Hallgrímskirkja ⛪. Towering over Reykjavík, its extraordinary design was inspired by Iceland’s natural landscape, including its distinctive rock formations, mountains and glaciers. And directly opposite the church is an amazing bakery, which absolutely must not be missed — the perfect place to stop for a delicious treat and a warm drink!

🚗 But the real adventure started when we picked up the hire car…

One confession: hiring the smallest car available probably wasn’t my wisest decision! 😂 In February, with heavy snow, slippery roads and some interesting moments trying to keep the car pointing in the right direction, it certainly made the trip memorable.

My partner was perhaps slightly less enthusiastic about my winter driving skills — particularly when it looked like we might end up stranded in the middle of absolutely nowhere! 😂

But that was half the fun.

We headed out to explore Iceland’s famous Golden Circle, taking in Þingvellir National Park, the spectacular Geysir geothermal area and the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall.

Freezing temperatures, snow-covered landscapes, slippery roads and scenery unlike almost anywhere else I’d visited. Absolutely stunning. ❄️🏔️

You can, of course, explore the Golden Circle on an organised coach tour — but for me, having your own car and being able to stop when you want makes it a completely different adventure.

Back in Reykjavík, we discovered something else about Iceland…

🍺 Alcohol isn’t cheap!

Nevertheless, we managed to find an Irish bar and somehow ended up singing well into the night while drinking some incredibly expensive alcohol! You have to make the most of the atmosphere, don’t you? 😂🍻

I still remember this trip incredibly fondly.

Would I recommend Reykjavík for a winter weekend? Absolutely.

And would I hire a car again?

100% — although perhaps a slightly bigger one next time! 😂🚗❄️
