**A day trip to Staithes from Robin Hood’s Bay** 🎨

Last Saturday, Liv and I headed to Staithes to check out the **Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage**.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I knew Staithes was a lovely village to explore, and it only around a 35 minute drive from Robin Hood’s Bay.

And wow… there was SO much going on. 🎨

The festival had more than 100 artists exhibiting across 67 venues, with pop-up galleries tucked into cottages throughout the village. There was painting, ceramics, textiles, sculpture, photography and lots more.

We also went to a really interesting talk about **Dark Matter** by Boulby Underground Lab scientist Chris Toth. There were lots of other heritage talks, music and workshops too.

One thing I’d definitely recommend if you’re visiting during the festival is picking up a programme and following the numbered art trail, that way you don't miss anything.

We also popped into **Staithes Museum**, which is free to enter and dog friendly 🐾, and stopped for lunch at the Old Watch House pop-up café, where we had steak rolls with a gorgeous view out to sea.

Of course, Staithes is lovely even when the festival isn't on. The narrow streets, old fishermen’s cottages, harbour and dramatic coastline make it a great place to spend a few hours wandering around.

🚗 **Getting there:** It’s around a 35 minute drive from Robin Hood’s Bay. There’s also public transport via Whitby.

If you’re staying with us at **Dock Cottage or Sherwood House**, Staithes is definitely one to put on your list of places to visit along the Yorkshire coast.

🐬 Dolphins, seals… and a WHALE! 🐋

Twice over the last couple of weeks, Matt and I have walked along the Cleveland Way towards Whitby and spotted dolphins. Then, a few days ago, we saw dolphins, seals AND a whale! 😍

It was one of those real pinch me moments when we looked at each other and thought, how lucky are we to live here and see this on a morning dog walk? 🐾

We’ve not lived in Robin Hood’s Bay for very long, so seeing wildlife like this on our doorstep still feels pretty amazing (I'm not sure it will ever not).

If you’re staying in the Bay, keep your eyes on the sea when walking along the Cleveland Way towards Whitby. Look out for large groups of gannets and seagulls feeding on shoals of fish, where there are lots of fish, there may well be dolphins, seals or even whales nearby.

And don’t forget your binoculars! 👀

June to November is apparently a good time for spotting whales and dolphins along the Yorkshire Coast, and there’s a really useful page that shares local sightings too (let me know if you want the link).

You can also get out on the sea with wildlife trips from Whitby or Staithes if you fancy getting a little closer to the action.

And if you don’t spot anything on your walk… there’s always the Dolphin Pub in Robin Hood’s Bay for a drink and a bite to eat! 😂🐬🍻

My only regret is that I didn’t get any decent photos. They all look like little black dots in the sea! 🤣

🥾 111 miles. 4 days. One very sore pair of feet! 😂

Matt and his friend Kev have just completed the Cleveland Way, walking the full 111 miles from Helmsley to Filey in just four days.

That’s a LOT of walking in a very short space of time and, unsurprisingly, Matt’s feet didn’t fare particularly well! 😬

Kev has kindly written about it for me, taking us through each day of the walk, along the North York Moors, through Saltburn, Staithes and Whitby, and finally along the coast to Robin Hood’s Bay and Filey.

They even managed a night of wild camping on the coast… before arriving in Robin Hood’s Bay for a bath and a very comfortable night’s sleep at Sherwood House. 🛁😴, before setting off again on the final leg to Filey.

Save the date - The New Victorian Weekend is coming to Robin Hood’s Bay

This December, Robin Hood’s Bay is bringing you the New Victorian Weekend, as part of the Robin Hood’s Bay Advent Festival. There will be three magical weekends throughout December:

✨ 5th–6th December – The New Victorian Weekend
🏴‍☠️ 12th–13th December – Pirates & Smugglers Weekend
🎅 19th–20th December – Family Weekend

Plans of events are coming together and you can expect live music, christmas carols, entertainment, market stalls, displays plus the famous biscuit dunking competition.

Traditional dress is really encouraged during the New Victorian Weekend, helping to transform the cobbled streets and historic buildings of Bay and make you feel as though you’ve truly stepped back in time.

We still have some availability at Dock Cottage and Sherwood House if you fancy making a weekend of it.

We’ll keep you updated as more plans are announced.

What do you love about Robin Hood’s Bay?

I love wondering through the village early in the morning when it’s just waking up and you have it all to yourself.

You can really loose yourself in the cobbled streets and just listen to the waves crash on the beach.
