Pavlopetri is a uniquely intact 5,000-year-old Bronze Age settlement submerged just 3 to 4 meters underwater in Vatika Bay, between the Peloponnese mainland and Elafonisos island.
Rediscovered in 1967, it is the oldest recognized underwater city, boasting mapped streets, 15 distinct buildings, courtyards, and ancient graves.
Human habitation at the site dates back to 3500 BC, with the main town flourishing between 3000 and 1000 BC. Underwater surveys have mapped about 30,000 square meters of the settlement, making it the only known submerged city with a nearly complete town plan.
The seabed around the town is scattered with pithoi (massive ceramic storage jars), indicating it was a major Bronze Age hub for cargo, textiles, and wine.
While it remains a debated topic among historians and geologists, the city's sinking is widely attributed to tectonic shifts. The region is known for seismic activity, which likely caused land subsidence, powerful earthquakes, or a shifting coastline over the centuries.
