A journey through Guangdong — from the Pearl River to the South Seas.
Guangdong is often introduced through food, skylines and famous landmarks.
But there is another Guangdong — one found around a morning tea table, behind the doors of old neighbourhoods, beside village waterways, and inside letters once sent across the ocean.
Our 7-day journey follows a natural cultural route through:
Guangzhou → Foshan → Shunde → Kaiping → Taishan
In Guangzhou, we begin with yum cha and the rhythm of old Cantonese neighbourhoods.
In Foshan, lion dance, martial arts and temple traditions are not simply performances — they are still part of everyday community life.
In Shunde, we go beyond “what to eat” and discover why food here became such an important way of life — through markets, fish ponds, waterways and seasonal ingredients.
Then the journey turns towards the overseas Chinese homeland.
In Kaiping and Taishan, diaolou towers, family photographs, remittance letters and old port towns reveal stories of people who left Guangdong for Southeast Asia, North America and beyond — while never completely leaving home behind.
This is not a checklist of cultural attractions.
It is a slower way of travelling:
eating well, staying comfortably, meeting local people, and understanding the stories that shaped a place.
