Guaranteed back-to-ship timing The 11:30 AM start is perfectly timed for tender arrivals. The walk finishes by 1pm, leaving you plenty of time for lunch at the harbour or a stroll on the East Pier before your "all aboard" call.

The Dún Laoghaire coast is more river than Dublin Riviera at the moment and dangerous for walking with high spring tide, flooding and overtopping. The walk on Saturday 7 February is cancelled. Stay safe everybody and hope to see you 14 February walking in the sunshine again.

𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐘𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐭 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐬
Dunleary, a small creek, was to change beyond recognition when the new harbour was built 1817-1842. Kingstown Harbour became the centre for yachting, a sport that was spreading around the Irish coast in the nineteenth century. A newspaper article from 1898 described how during yachting season, “Kingstown is conceded to be the most charming and prosperous suburban place in Ireland”:
Throughout the nineteenth and into the twentieth centuries, Kingstown was the chosen place of arrival and departure for royal visits. These royal visits attracted enormous public interest with their aura of pageantry and spectacle. Queen Victoria visited Kingstown on no less than four occasions in 1849, 1853, 1861 and 1900.

𝐃ú𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐨𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐬
Did you know that by 1950, there were more than 30 hotels in Dún Laoghaire, and many of these remained open until the early 1980s? Now, just two hotels remain: Royal Marine Hotel and Haddington House.

The walk is led by Eileen O'Duffy, a local historian, and the author of two books, ‘From Dirt and Dips to Dryrobes, bathing in Dun Laoghaire through the ages’ and ‘Champagne, Cocktails and Crêpes Suzette, wining, dining and dancing in Dun Laoghaire through the ages’. The two books are available in Dalkey News, 27 Castle Street, Dalkey, Co Dublin.
