Before the grand chariot rolls… there is the secret ritual of sandalwood.

21 days before the world watches Lord Jagannath emerge in all his glory, Puri begins a quieter, more intimate ceremony — Chandan Yatra.

The deities are anointed with fragrant sandalwood paste and taken on boat processions across the sacred Narendra Tank. The air smells of camphor and flowers. Devotees gather at water's edge. It is unhurried, devotional, almost private.
