The building came before the address.
Piazza della Signoria 5 began in the fourteenth century. In 1786 it took in what was left
of San Romolo, the only church the square ever had, closed seventeen years earlier
under the Leopoldine suppressions.
Bernardo Fallani gave it the facade you see from the paving, and a marble plaque on
the wall still records the church that stood here.

Open the doors and the city is already there.

From 25 September, Palazzo Strozzi opens Broken. Il potere del frammento, an exhibition on the power of the fragment in art from antiquity to the present day.
It runs until 24 January, ten minutes on foot across the centre.

September is still high season in Florence.
The square fills by mid morning and stays full until evening, and the queues are as long as they were in July.
What changes is how far you have to walk to be in it, and how quickly you can be out of it again.
Two floors up, with the coffee still warm, the crowd becomes something you look at.
