The 'Paesaggio' (Landscape) was painted on 5 August 1473 by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519).
The date is written in the left corner at the top of the painting.

The Paesaggio is not only the first known work painted by Leonardo, but also the first of its kind in Western art and civilization.

The painting depicts the territory of Valdinievole and Valdarno Inferiore, both located in Tuscany, enshroudded in the typical smoky effect, called 'sfumato', of the atmospheric perspective which was minted by Leonardo da Vinci.

The 'Paesaggio' is housed at the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe at the Uffizi Gallery and it is usually not displayed for conservative reasons. However, it was extraordinarily exhibited in 2019 at the Leonardo Museum in Vinci, during the celebrations for the 500th anniversary from Leonardo's death.
Leonardo was an illegitemate son, born outiside the marriage, from the notary Ser Piero and a modest lady, Caterina. He had no family name, so they just called him Leonardo da Vinci (Leonardo from Vinci, his birthtown, next to Florence).

The diagnostic campaign carried by Opificio delle Pietre Dure in 2019 revealed that Leonardo da Vinci was ambidextrous. He wrote and painted with both hands: with the left - his dominant hand - and the right one.
The drawing bears two inscriptions: one is on the front side, written in the mirror by Leonardo from right to left: “Dì di s[an]ta Maria della neve / addj 5 daghossto 1473”; and the other on the back, ordinarily written from left to right: "Io, Morando d'Antoni, sono chontento", perhaps a note concerning a contract drafting.
A comparison between the two inscriptions provides us with the confirmation of Leonardo's ambidexterity.

Around one month ago, my article 'The evolution of roof gardens in Medicean Florence: hanging gardens, orticini and giardino di piazza' was published on the summer issue of the Journal of the Gardens Trust.
I have worked on this specialist essay in 2023, while I was attending the diploma of Garden History at RBGE.
It was a fascinating experience to be able to research at the archives of Florence. I will never forget my first feeling when I read a note signed by the gardener, Agnolo di Giuliano, in charge of the Giardino di Piazza for the Grand Duke Francesco I.
I was also enthusiastic to meet Lorenzo Mazzanga, the almost forgotten plant provider to Francesco I, and to read his letters about flowers...
It was an intense experience and I hope I will have the time and the energy to go ahead with a new article in the next future.
Garden history is an intriguing topic and there is so much to study yet!
I would like to thank Dr Johanna Lausen-Higgings from RBGE, Dr Daniele Conti and Dr Maximilian Hernandez, Dr Ortensia Martinez, Dr Barbara Simms and Dr Christian Ratti from GT for their help and time.
You can find my article on the summer issue of the Journal of the Gardens Trust or you can download it from jstor, otherwise, if you are interested, I will be pleased to send you the pdf version 📧 : [email protected].
Happy summer reading 😊🌳

A stroll in Lucca, one of the most fascinating city of Tuscany.
Birthplace to Giacomo Puccini, it is reckoned as the city of 100 churches, due to the fact it is situated along the Via Francigena, the pilgrimage road from Canterbury to Rome.
Lucca's squares often have a French allure: under the shadow of the sycamore trees, Lucca is brimming with glamourous boutiques and tantalizing ice-cream shops. The lovely Piazzetta del Libro is twinned with the bouquinistes in Paris.
Graceful neo-classical statues embellish elegant squares.
Lucca is surrounded by massive city walls, where you can ride your bike and discover plenty of new points of view. And it is all beautified by amazing gardens and villas.
Definitely a city I truly adore!

Only one hour and thirty minutes from Florence by train.

25 JULY , Santiago de Compostela's day
⭐️⛵️🐚🚶‍♂️🧭

Today we celebrate San Giacomo (St James, St Jacques, Santiago), better known as Santiago de Compostela.
📖According to tradition, the apostle James the Elder (...? - 44? a.D.)was John's brother and son of Zebedee.

⛰️St James witnessed the transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor and escorted Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemani after the Last Supper.
🇪🇸 He later travelled to Spain in order to preach the Gospel and evangelize crowds. He died in Jerusalem.
His apostles, Teodomiro and Atanasio, stole the body and carried it on a boat, leaded by Divine Providence.
🧭The boat sailed Western, and finally reached Spain. James'corpse was buried in a chapel, where later both apostles were buried too.
⭐️After many centuries of neglect, the sepulchre was founded in a field ( = campo) by the hermit Pelayo, helped by the starlight ( = stella).
✨️Later, a city, Santiago de Compostela, was raised on St James' sepulchre.

⛵️⛵️⛵️Between 13th and 18th century, Florence used to celebrate San Giacomo - St James - Santiago on 25th July with the "Palio dei Navicelli", a parade of boats sailing on Arno river, in front of the Church of San Jacopo Soprarno.⛪️

😇 St James is the protector of pilgrims, knights, crusaders, horseriders, hat-makers, shoes-maker, and he is the holy patron of Spain.

🐚 His symbol is the hat with the shell, and symbol of every pilgrim too.

I am still feeling touched and have just simple words about a grandiose evening.
The spectacular venue. The unbelievable landscape. The stage, the lights, the sounds. The superb orchestra. The talent of the artists.
And The Voice...
Andrea Bocelli, UNESCO world heritage!!!

Tuscany is a region of too many talents, too many beauties, too much art.
It is literally overwhelming!
I strongly recommend to attend this concert, feel the music, feel the landscape, listen to the celestial music.
So many emotions.

I met friends and colleagues, it was lovely.
It was an unforgettable evening.
