There’s a church in Naples that few people truly know, yet it holds some of the greatest masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.
📍The Church of San Giovanni a Carbonara was founded in the 14th century, when this area still lay outside the city walls. Over the centuries it was enriched by kings, cardinals, and noble families, becoming one of Naples’ most extraordinary monumental complexes.
Inside, you’ll find the magnificent Mausoleum of King Ladislaus of Durazzo, one of the largest Gothic funerary monuments in Italy, crowned by a spectacular equestrian statue overlooking the entire church.
Among its highlights are the Caracciolo del Sole Chapel, one of the earliest examples of Renaissance art in Naples, famous for its frescoes and remarkable 15th-century majolica floor, and the Caracciolo di Vico Chapel, a true Renaissance masterpiece designed by Bartolomé Ordóñez and Diego de Siloé.
The church is also home to stunning chapels, colorful marble decorations, funerary monuments, and countless works of art that tell the story of centuries of faith, power, and Neapolitan history.
