The allure of Kanzashi

Originally, the term kanzashi referred to many types of hair ornaments. Over time, these accessories continuously evolved: in shape, materials, purpose, and symbolism, becoming increasingly diverse and sophisticated.
Today, Kanzashi are known for their sophistication and remarkable variety of forms, materials, and details. They are particularly famous for their delicate silk flowers, handcrafted with great precision and often designed to reflect the seasons through the flower of the month.
Kanzashi are mostly worn during special occasions and by specific figures, especially maiko (apprentice geisha). Unlike geiko (the Kyoto term for geisha), whose hairstyles are generally more refined and understated, maiko wear elaborate hairstyles that evolve throughout their training and reflect their progression.

KYOTO COLLABORATIONS

Through this series, we want to share collaborations where Kyoto, Japan, global creatives, and brands come together to create something new and interesting across fashion, design, and culture.

We will explore both past and present collaborations.

Today, we are sharing the collaboration between the fashion brand “T.T,” founded by designer and contemporary artist Taiga Takahashi, and the French perfume house “Arpa,” led by perfumer Barnabé Fillion.

If there is one thing Japan does remarkably well, it is using raw materials in their purest and most natural form. Wood is one of the best examples of this approach.

Japan has always been deeply connected to nature. Much of the country is mountainous and covered with vast forests.. This relationship with nature is also reflected in Shintoism, Japan’s oldest religion, which is based on animistic beliefs and considers natural elements, including trees, as sacred.

The importance of wood in Japanese culture is therefore far from accidental. Beyond its abundance, wood has long been appreciated for its durability, adaptability, and natural beauty. For centuries, it has been used in the construction of temples, shrines, machiya townhouses, and traditional interiors, while also remaining present in everyday objects and craftsmanship.

This culture of wood is especially visible in Kyoto, where traditional architecture and artisanal practices continue to shape the city’s identity. Even today, wood remains an essential part of daily life, balancing the preservation of historic heritage with practical, contemporary use.
