Gede is one of the Kenyan coast's most significant windows into Swahili history.

Set within 45 acres of coastal forest near Watamu, the ruins are the remains of a once-thriving Swahili town whose origins trace back to the 12th century. Its coral-stone mosques, palace, homes and tombs reveal a sophisticated settlement that flourished within the wider Indian Ocean trading world.

By the first half of the 17th century, Gede had been abandoned and gradually reclaimed by the surrounding forest. Today, its archaeological remains offer a remarkable insight into Swahili architecture, urban planning and cultural exchange. In 2024, Gede was inscribed as Kenya's eighth UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For Liberty Africa Safaris, experiences such as Gede are part of what makes a Kenya coast programme more than an extension to a safari. They bring the history, culture and character of the destination into the journey.

Amboseli National Park is home to some of the most studied elephant herds on Earth; more than 1,600 individually identified elephants documented across over 50 years of continuous research. Among them, bulls like this one.

Fewer than a few dozen big tuskers remain across all of Africa, making every encounter a rare privilege.

Our guides know these individuals, their movements, and exactly where to be when a giant like this decides to appear.

This is what a Liberty Africa Safaris programme in Amboseli looks like.

Some camps simply feel right the moment you arrive.

Hemingways River Camp Mara sits along the Njageteck River in the private Mara North Conservancy; eight tents, a deep connection to the land, and one of the most wildlife-rich corners of the Greater Maasai Mara.

With off-road access, night drives and expert Maasai guides, this is the kind of camp that goes beyond game viewing. It places you inside the ecosystem rather than alongside it, with the Great Migration passing through the conservancy and resident predators hunting the riverine forest after dark.

At Liberty Africa Safaris, every camp we recommend has been assessed personally. Hemingways River Camp Mara earns its place.

The Great Migration is one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on Earth; but witnessing it at its most dramatic comes down to one thing: knowing exactly when and where to be.

Made famous through Big Cat Diary, the legendary Marsh Pride continues to shape life around Musiara Marsh, where one of Africa's most celebrated lion dynasties still reigns. The Topi Boys coalition now holds the territory, while a new generation of cubs begins its place in that story.

July is one of the most rewarding times to follow them. As the dry season settles in, wildlife naturally gathers around permanent water, bringing the Mara's predators and prey into closer rhythm and creating exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing.

A wildebeest at golden hour. A giraffe at arm’s reach. A lioness moving through the grass.

This is what a single game drive in the Masai Mara looks like when the positioning is right.

At Liberty Africa Safaris, nearly 30 years on the ground means we know which conservancy, which guide and which time of day puts you inside moments like these.

Three ways to arrive in the Masai Mara. Which one is yours? 🌍

SWIPE. ↓

THE ROAD
Five to six hours from Nairobi. The Rift Valley escarpment opening on your left. The plains beginning somewhere past Narok. You arrive in the afternoon, dusty and ready for the first drive.

THE FLIGHT
Forty-five minutes from Wilson Airport. The city dissolves beneath you, the Rift Valley opens from above, and the Mara begins before you land. A Liberty Africa Safaris vehicle is waiting at the airstrip. Your first game drive starts within the hour.

THE HELICOPTER
The Mara from above first. The herds visible from the air before you touch down. The conservancy stretching in every direction. Then the vehicle. Then the game drive.

All three are extraordinary in their own way.

Liberty Africa Safaris designs and manages the ground programme for every version — from the road transfer to the fly-in to the helicopter experience. Nearly 30 years of knowing how each one should feel from the moment you arrive.
