Ol Gaboli Lodge is Kenya’s only Maasai and female-owned safari lodge. It sits in Laikipia, where open land, rare wildlife, and deep-rooted communities live alongside nature. The Ilmotiok Community owns it, and the Ol Gaboli Women’s Group manages its daily operations.

The economics are built differently here. 70% of revenue flows directly to the Women’s Group. 30% goes to the community’s land management committee. This isn’t charity framing the lodge; it’s the lodge existing because the community chose this model.

When guests arrive, they’re moving through the landscape with guides who’ve walked these grasslands their whole lives. They stay in luxury that’s grounded in place - comfortable, thoughtful, rooted in deep knowledge.

Safari tourism can strengthen the communities it depends on. Ol Gaboli proves that guest experience and community stewardship work as one.

South African visual artist Zana Masombuka merges image-making with ritual. Adorning the cover of our latest issue, Masombuka works across photography, installation, beadwork, and sculpture. Rooted in the visual culture of the Ndebele people from Zimbabwe and South Africa, her style is known for geometric patterns and beadwork traditions, as something alive and carried forward through those who engage with intention.

Much like the lessons we learn from travel, Masombuka’s art encourages us to remain open to wonder, curiosity, and the unexpected possibilities that emerge through both living and creating.

For Masombuka, it’s paramount: “You should never lose your whimsy.”
