Who is Nelson Mandela?

Born on 18 July 1918, Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the struggle against apartheid. He fought a strict system of institutionalized racial segregation and political oppression in South Africa from 1948 to the early 1990s, championing for equality, justice, reconciliation and human dignity.

After spending 27 years in prison, he emerged not seeking revenge, but peace, helping lead South Africa's peaceful democratic transition.

In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day, recognizing his lifelong commitment to conflict resolution, human rights, democracy and service to humanity.

As the only UN Headquarters in Africa and the Global South, UNON is proud to celebrate an African leader whose values continue to inspire the work of the United Nations worldwide.

Together, let's honour Madiba, not only by remembering him, but by living his values.

The UN commemorated World Kiswahili Language Day at UNON this week, celebrating Kiswahili as a language of unity, cultural identity, multilingualism and intercultural dialogue.

Kiswahili is the most widely spoken language in sub-Saharan Africa, and serves as a lingua franca in over 14 African countries.

It also remains the first African language to have a dedicated UN observance on the 7th of July.
