🐾World African Wild Dog Day🐾

Yesterday we celebrated one of Africa’s most fascinating predators - and my favorite animal in Africa: the African Wild Dog.

Known for their incredible teamwork, these highly social and intelligent predators are sadly among the continent’s most endangered carnivores.

There’s something truly special about watching a pack interact: the enthusiastic greetings, the playful chaos, the strong social bonds, and their incredible hunting skills.

With fewer than 7,000 wild dogs remaining in the wild, protecting this species and preserving the wild spaces they call home is more important than ever.

Here’s to keeping these incredible painted wolves where they belong in the wild.

The Topi Pride had hunted a decent-sized warthog the morning before last. Sure, it was far from filling the bellies of the entire pride and could only serve as an appetizer for a few, but sadly, they didn't even get the chance to enjoy it... The king arrived to claim his share!

So Olepolos or Osapuk? (You know very well I can't tell lions apart! lol) showed up, grabbed the prey, and hurried off to drag it under a bush, well hidden from view. Three young lions followed him from a distance, with worried looks and their ears pinned back, thinking to themselves that the moms were going to need to hunt something much bigger, and fast!

One evening we caught up with Kulete and her son, Sadala. They were clearly hungry and searching for food, and Kulete attempted to hunt a topi but was unsuccessful. As it was getting late and the sun was going down, we left them, knowing they would settle down for the night.

Cheetahs are predominantly daytime hunters, relying on their exceptional eyesight to locate and pursue their prey.

So, the following morning, we went looking for them again and yes, they were still looking for food. We gave them plenty of space to hunt, keeping well back so we wouldn’t disturb either the prey or the hunt.

This time, they were successful. Kulete brought down a Thomson’s gazelle, and it was incredible to watch. The speed was unbelievable , it happened so quickly that none of us even had time to lift our cameras before it was all over!

Wild dog puppies at Lion Sands once again.

Their story began with a newly formed pack of five Toulon females and three males from Timbavati. Now, six weeks on, the puppies have doubled in size and are becoming increasingly mobile. It won’t be long before the den is left behind and this new generation begins moving with the pack.

For a species whose future depends on every successful litter, watching this story unfold on the reserve feels particularly significant.

Ten days old, and still learning what its own hands are for!

Our clients found this little one buried in its mother’s chest in Bwindi’s undergrowth this morning. They drove 2 hours and then took to foot & walked in closer to the family. To then be greeted by such a little angel, wow, no words!

At this age it can’t yet grip mother’s fur on its own; she carries the full weight of it, hour by hour, nursing roughly once every sixty minutes. It will be another five to six months before it breaks contact with her for more than a few seconds at a time and years before it stops needing her at all. Full weaning doesn’t come until age three or four, a more dedicated mother will be hard to find.

There’s something humbling about watching a creature this fragile exist inside a troop this powerful, a forest so vast.

What an epic encounter!

Baraka was 31 years old, and for the final 17 years of his life, he lived without sight.

After losing his right eye in a territorial fight and eventually his left to cataracts, he had to relearn the world through memory, instinct and sound. Yet Baraka never became fearful or withdrawn. He knew his caregivers and visitors by their footsteps, often before they even spoke.

With the help of his caretakers at Ol Pejeta, he adapted to a life in darkness and became far more than a survivor. He became an ambassador for black rhinos, inspiring thousands of people to care about a species fighting for its existence.

Baraka’s story was never really about blindness. It was about resilience, trust and the extraordinary ability to adapt.

He couldn’t see the world for most of his final chapter, yet somehow, he helped so many others see conservation more clearly.
