Did you know? An elephant’s pregnancy lasts about 22 months the longest gestation period of any land mammal. A fully-grown African elephant can also drink 100-200 litres of water in a single day, especially during hot weather. Their presence enriches our landscapes, supports biodiversity and creates unforgettable safari experiences for visitors from across the globe.

This World Elephant Day, we celebrate the vital connection between wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism. Protecting elephants means protecting the natural heritage, livelihoods and authentic experiences that continue to attract travelers to the Greater Laikipia Landscape.

As Kenya advances its vision of becoming a world-class tourism destination, ensuring compliance, quality assurance and service excellence across the tourism and hospitality sector remains a key priority.

To support this agenda, tourism and hospitality stakeholders, including members of the Laikipia Tourism Association (LTA), participated in a sensitization forum on the National Classification Exercise for Catering and Accommodation Facilities organized by the Tourism Regulatory Authority(TRA).

The forum brought together industry players from Nyeri, Laikipia, Isiolo, Samburu, Meru and Marsabit Counties to deepen understanding of compliance and quality assurance frameworks, the importance of facility classification and the role of licensing in promoting industry standards. Participants were also taken through the classification criteria, assessment processes and the benefits of aligning with recognized quality benchmarks.

Speaking during the forum, LTA Chairman Mr. Gilbert Mutembei commended stakeholders for their commitment to continuous improvement and emphasized the importance of collaboration in strengthening the tourism sector. He encouraged industry players to work together through the Association to advance shared goals.

The workshop also introduced stakeholders to the East African Community (EAC) Classification Framework, a regional quality assurance initiative designed to harmonize standards for hotels, restaurants and other tourism establishments across East Africa set to roll out in July.

As the government continues implementing these initiatives, the Laikipia Tourism Association remains committed to supporting its members in achieving compliance, enhancing service quality and positioning the Greater Laikipia Landscape as a premier and globally competitive tourism destination.

Did you know that World Giraffe Day is celebrated on the longest day of the year in honor of the animal with the longest neck?

Known for their elegance, gentle nature and towering presence, giraffes are among the iconic species that form part of natural heritage. Under this year’s theme, "Partnerships in Conservation for a Healthy Planet and People," we recognize that protecting giraffes is a shared responsibility.

Through collaboration between communities, conservation partners, tourism operators and hospitality businesses, we can secure a future where wildlife and people thrive together.
