Often defined by myths and their unmistakable “laugh,” hyenas play a crucial ecological role in keeping our ecosystems healthy. As nature’s ultimate recyclers, they can consume and digest almost every part of their prey including bones, skin and even hooves thanks to incredibly powerful stomach acids. This unique ability helps prevent the spread of diseases and keeps the landscape clean.

Laikipia is one of the few places in Kenya where visitors may encounter not just one, but three remarkable species: the iconic spotted hyena, the elusive striped hyena, and the shy, insect loving aardwolf. Each offers a fascinating glimpse into the diversity of life that thrives in this landscape.

Through responsible tourism, conservation and community partnerships, Laikipia continues to protect these underappreciated species while offering visitors unforgettable, authentic wildlife experiences.

As we mark International Earth Day, we celebrate the Greater Laikipia Landscape diverse, iconic and yet fragile. This unique mosaic of wildlife, communities and ecosystems is not only a source of pride, but also a shared responsibility.

Under this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” we are reminded that the future of Laikipia lies in the choices we make today. We hold a collective power to shape a tourism model that sustains rather than depletes, that restores rather than disrupts.

Meaningful tourism must extend beyond experience to embody a culture of stewardship. This means embracing practices that conserve biodiversity, respect community livelihoods and reduce environmental impact. Each hospitality firm, conservancy and tour operator has a role to play in safeguarding the natural heritage that defines our destination.
