Every Malagasy cocotte begins its journey in Ambatolampy.
Born from molten aluminium, shaped in earth moulds by experienced hands, polished until it shines… it waits patiently for someone to take it home.
But where will its story begin?
Perhaps it will travel hundreds of kilometres on the back of a bush taxi or a truck, crossing Madagascar from the Highlands to the coast.
Maybe it will become a true traveller itself, accompanying a truck driver day after day. And when an unexpected breakdown brings the journey to a halt, the fire is lit beside the road, and before long the cocotte is quietly simmering, turning a delay into a shared meal.
Perhaps it will spend its days in the rice fields, carried each morning with the family, feeding hardworking farmers beneath the open sky before returning home together in the evening.
Or maybe it will find its place beside a small house, on a charcoal fire in the sand near the sea, where the day’s catch becomes dinner as the sun slowly disappears beyond the horizon.
From bustling towns to remote villages…
From the green Highlands to the dry South…
From the forests of the East to the warm waters of the West…
One simple pot.
Countless journeys.
Thousands of meals.
A lifetime of memories.
Some objects are made to be used.
A Malagasy cocotte is made to become part of life.
