Oaxaca is incredibly diverse with over a dozen different ethnolinguistic groups residing in the state. Each has its own language, customs, folk dances, and traditional manner of dress. This article tells gives some background on a few of the different traditional outfits along with the dances performed at the Guelaguetza, the festival which celebrates Oaxaca's cultural diversity.

Every July, Oaxaca hosts Guelaguetza, a joyous celebration of the region’s rich cultural heritage including the complex, fascinating, and beautiful outfits of the state’s different regions.

A beautiful day in Oaxaca city (like most!) and the perfect time to take a stroll to appreciate local art and architecture. This artwork by Adan Paredes is part of an homage to Oaxacan painter Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991). Various artists created works of art in the form of a watermelon slice (a recurring theme in Tamayo's work). Paredes is a sculptor and ceramicist originally from Mexico City but has resided in Oaxaca for many years. He currently has an exhibit at the Museo de Pintores de Oaxaca.

Mama turtles make their way onto a beach in Oaxaca state to lay their eggs. In about 45 days the baby turtles will hatch and head to the ocean. They'll face many risks in their first few days and weeks. Many of them won't make it, but the females that survive will return to this same beach to lay their eggs in years to come.

Day of the Dead is almost here! For a second year, most public events are canceled in Oaxaca, but this year there are lots of tourists here anyway. There will still be plenty to see and do, and we're looking forward to spending some time with the spirits -- as well as our living visitors!
