Itinerary:
6:30 AM – Departure: We pick you up directly from your preferred location in Oaxaca City.

7:00 AM – Traditional Breakfast: Fuel up with a hearty, authentic Oaxacan breakfast.

8:00 AM – The Hike Begins: We start our ascent to Xiguie (El Picacho), the sacred mountain overlooking Teotitlán del Valle. Enjoy spectacular, panoramic valley views along the way.

12:00 PM – Tlacolula Sunday Market: We drive to the historic Tlacolula market for a guided immersion into one of Mesoamerica's oldest continuous trading traditions.

2:00 - 3:00 PM – Return: We begin our journey back, arriving in Oaxaca City shortly after.

LANIRÓ, the word for “Fiesta Grande” in Zapotec, is a community organized festival expressing the cultural and ceremonial uniqueness of our local traditions. It is based on the concept of Galguez, or Guelaguetza: the traditional form of creating unity and mutual support through the sharing of gifts of food, ritual and dance.

It takes place annually at the beginning of August at the archeological site of Yagul in Tlacolula and celebrates the anniversary of the declaration of the Prehistoric Caves of Yagul and Mitla as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 2010. The paintings and vestiges found in the caves date as far back as 12,000 years and are an invaluable record of the habitation and ways of life of our ancestors, including the domestication of maize and squash.

Your participation in Voz de las Estrellas will support Laniró in 2026, which has more than tripled in scope since it started 4 years ago.

What is Voz de las Estrellas, or Voice of the Stars?

It is a star gazing event held at the archeological site of Yagul designed to share and inform the public about special astronomical occasions like the upcoming winter solstice. The celestial vault and the stars’ relationship to the earth was a very important element in pre-hispanic cultures and continues to be a source of cultural identity for many inhabitants of the Valley of Tlacolula through healing practices, stories and astrology. This event is an invitation to revisit some of traditional practices of observation and contemplation of the stars and the natural environment in an intentional and harmonious way.

The Grupo Coadyuvante, the organizers behind both LANIRO and Noche de Estrellas, is a 100% local volunteer organization. Eighty percent of the cost of production is covered by guelaguetza and only 20% of our costs are paid for. Your contribution will be applied to running costs exclusively.
