Newborn Cape fur seal pups are born with pitch-black fur, which changes to gray with a pale throat within 3 to 5 months. They typically weigh between 4.5 and 7 kilograms and measure around 60 to 70 centimeters at birth. These pups are born in late November or early December and depend entirely on their mothers for nutrition and protection during their initial months, as they are born without blubber and cannot swim immediately.

One remarkable fact about Cape fur seal pups is their rapid vocal recognition: mothers can recognize their pup's cry just two hours after birth, and pups can recognize their mother's calls within 4 to 6 hours. This ability is crucial for reuniting in the crowded breeding colonies where thousands of pups are born. After a few days of nursing, mothers leave their pups behind in groups called "creches," guarded by other mothers, to go hunt for food in the sea. The rich seal milk allows pups to survive a few days without their mother.

Additionally, many newborn pups gain swimming ability by about three months of age, transitioning from clumsy land movement to graceful swimmers. There is a significant mortality rate in the first few months, around 30%, mainly due to predators like jackals and brown hyenas.

The pink salt lakes near Walvis Bay are a stunning natural phenomenon created by vast salt evaporation ponds. Their vibrant pink color comes from salt-loving microorganisms and algae, especially Dunaliella salina, which produce carotenoid pigments like beta-carotene. These lakes are part of Walvis Bay's extensive salt production area, making them both a vital industrial site and a captivating landscape for photography and wildlife watching. The contrast of the pink water against the white salt flats creates a surreal and beautifully unique environment.
