🌊Discover the Hidden History of Sandwich Harbour! 🇳🇦
Did you know that where the towering dunes of the Namib Desert plunge into the Atlantic, a bustling industrial harbor once stood?
For centuries, the indigenous ǂAonin (Topnaar) people utilized the hidden fresh water beneath the coastal sands. By the 19th century, Sandwich Harbour transformed into a major hub for American and European whaling ships, a booming guano trade, and even a permanent shore settlement complete with meat-curing facilities and a shark-liver oil refinery!
But nature always reclaims its own. Shifting desert dunes and powerful ocean currents eventually silted up the harbor entrance. Today, the deep-water port is completely closed off, leaving behind a breathtakingly beautiful, landlocked lagoon. Now a protected Ramsar wetland, it is a sanctuary for hundreds of thousands of flamingos, pelicans, and coastal birds. 🦩
The ruins of the old factories are buried deep beneath the sand, but the magic of the landscape remains. We believe in going the extra mile to show you the absolute best of our beautiful coastline, blending rich history with incredible wildlife.
