Reminiscing about the time I spent in Italy this time last year. On my bucket list was a gondola ride in Venice.
We thought we had done our research but walked away from our experience very disappointed, so I want to share some tips with you to help you get the best possible experience.
We didn't get chance to choose the gondola, as we were ushered to one and I didn't like the black interior. The gondolier was unfriendly and spent time on his mobile phone and finished the tour early.

1. Know the Official Rates
The base price for a gondola ride is fixed by local authorities. A standard 30-mins private ride is €90 during the day (8:00 AM to 7:00 PM) and €110 in the evening for 35 mins (7:00 PM to 8:00 AM). Because these rates are set by the city's Ente Gondola, do not attempt to haggle, and be sure to confirm the exact price and duration with the gondolier before boarding.

2. Steer Clear of the Crowds
Avoid embarking at heavily trafficked stations like Piazza San Marco or the main side of the Rialto Bridge to prevent bumper-to-bumper "gondola caravans". Instead, walk 10 minutes into quieter, less-trafficked neighbourhoods such as the Jewish Ghetto, Cannaregio, or Campo San Barnaba. This ensures a much more peaceful and scenic atmosphere.

3. Share the Ride to Save Money.
The €90–€110 base price is for the entire boat, not per person. Since a gondola can legally accommodate up to five or six passengers, you can split the cost significantly. If you are travelling solo or as a couple, consider booking a Shared Gondola Tour to keep costs down.

4.Discuss the Route.
Before you step onto the boat, review the route with the gondolier. You can request to stick entirely to the narrow back canals, spend a bit of time on the Grand Canal, or do a mix of both. Take a moment to chat briefly with a few different gondoliers to find one whose personality and language skills you enjoy before making your choice.

5. "The Traghetto" Alternative.
For just a quick, authentic, no frills gondola ride, you can use the local traghetto to cross the grand canal for only 2 euros each.

Today we celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year—a time to pause, reflect, remember those who are no longer with us, celebrate the present, and look ahead with hope for the future.

Matariki reminds us that life's greatest journeys are not always measured by the places we visit, but by the connections we make, the lessons we learn, and the communities we build along the way.

At Queenager on the Loose, I believe travel is about so much more than ticking destinations off a list. It's about opening our hearts, embracing different cultures with respect, finding belonging, and discovering new parts of ourselves.

As we honour Matariki today, may we take a moment to express gratitude, nurture our friendships, support our communities, and set intentions for the year ahead.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and meaningful Matariki.

Mānawatia a Matariki — Happy Matariki.

Perched on spectacular coastal cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Naples, Sorrento is the ultimate jumping-off point for exploring southern Italy. It combines world-class Mediterranean cuisine, ancient history, and vibrant culture with a relaxed, accessible atmosphere.

Here are 5 reasons to add Sorrento to your travel itinerary:

1. The Ultimate Home Base: Sorrento’s prime location on the Sorrentine Peninsula makes it incredibly easy to navigate. It is connected to the Trenitalia rail network, and the bustling port of Marina Piccola offers fast ferries to the Island of Capri in just 25 minutes.

2. World-Class Food & Wine: The region produces some of the best culinary delights in Italy. Be sure to try Gnocchi alla Sorrentina (potato gnocchi baked with tomato, mozzarella, and basil) and finish your meal with a chilled glass of authentic Limoncello di Sorrento made from local, oversized lemons.

3. Gateway to Ancient History: Staying in Sorrento puts you just a short 1.5-hour Circumvesuviana train ride or drive south of Naples, allowing for incredibly easy day trips to the iconic Pompeii Archaeological Park and Herculaneum in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.

4. Stunning Coastal Views: The town is famous for its dramatic clifftop scenery. Stroll over to Villa Comunale Park for sweeping panoramic views of the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the sparkling blue sea.

5. Charming Streets & Shopping: Unlike the overwhelmingly steep hills of the neighboring Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is largely flat and pedestrian-friendly. Wander down Corso Italia and Via San Cesareo to find boutique leather shops, intricate inlaid woodcrafts, and hand-painted ceramics.

5 years ago, today, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life. In the end, it was a sudden split-second decision. When I suddenly realized my life was NOT going to change unless I made the changes. I tried before in the past but had quickly been talked out of it.
After 25 years together, I walked away from the life I thought I would have forever. It wasn't a decision I made lightly, and it certainly wasn't one I ever imagined I'd have the strength to make.

Those early days were incredibly hard. I felt totally lost. There was so much grief, uncertainty, loneliness and moments where I questioned everything. I wasn't just grieving the end of a relationship. I was grieving the future, I'd always imagined. The milestones we would never share, the dreams that would never unfold. and the version of life I thought was already written.

Over the past 5 years, I've slowly learned that healing isn't about forgetting. It's about rebuilding. It's about learning to love yourself again, finding your voice, rediscovering your confidence, and creating a life that feels authentically yours.

I've learned to choose myself without guilt, I've discovered the importance of self-care, self-respect, and giving myself the same compassion I so freely gave to everyone else.

I visited 14 new countries, admiring sunrises in places I once only dreamed of. I've stood in front of breathtaking landscapes and wandered through ancient streets. Met beautiful souls from around the world and discovered that sometimes, the greatest adventure isn't the journey across the world,it's the journey back to yourself.

Most importantly, I've continued healing alongside my beautiful daughters. Our journey hasn't always been easy, but together, we're growing stronger, closer and more resilient than I could ever have imagined.

I'm still healing, I think we always are. Growth isn't a destination. It's a lifelong journey, but today, I can honestly say, "I'm proud of the woman I've become."

5 years later, I'm finally celebrating finding me.
Someone stronger,
Someone braver,
Someone freer,
With love
Lou
