Napier was destroyed by earthquake and fire in 1931 and rebuilt in the styles of the times. Napier’s Spanish Mission, Stripped Classical and above all Art Deco, are all styles that express the confidence, optimism and vigor of the early 20th century. Did you know the Dome clock tower once sounded the Westminster chimes with four English bells installed in 1936?

The bells were later removed and are now at the Faraday Museum of Technology, where you can try your hand as a bellringer and ring them yourself!

We are very sad to farewell Jet, our much-loved Art Deco Trust office dog and Staff Welfare Officer.

She took her responsibilities very seriously, keeping staff spirits up, stress levels down and the kitchen floor spotless of crumbs.

Behind the scenes, our small team manages a busy year-round tourism operation alongside New Zealand’s largest heritage festival, often while facing considerable challenges. Through it all, Jet was a calm and comforting presence, always there with a friendly face and a quiet reminder to pause, preferably for a bite to eat.

The Art Deco Trust office will not be the same without her. Farewell, dear Jet. You were a very good girl and a treasured member of our team.
