Meet the maker with Anna from Ngā Manu Nature Reserve 🌳🦆

Just outside Waikanae, Ngā Manu is one of those places where you can slow down and reconnect with nature.

Set across wetlands and native bush, it’s home to a wide range of native wildlife, including some of Aotearoa’s most iconic species.

One of the most memorable experiences here happens after dark.

The Kiwi Night Encounter gives you the rare chance to see kiwi up close in a quiet, guided setting. As the reserve settles into the evening, you’ll hear the sounds of the bush come alive and step into a side of the coast most people don’t usually see.

Anna and the team are passionate about conservation and sharing these experiences in a way that feels respectful, immersive, and genuinely special.

Whether you’re visiting during the day or heading along for the night encounter, it’s a place that stays with you long after you leave ☀️

Meet the maker with Norbert from The Milk Station 💒💍

Tucked away just outside Ōtaki, The Milk Station is one of those places that feels like you’ve stepped somewhere else entirely.

Originally built in 1919, the historic building has been carefully restored into a truly distinctive venue, where original steel beams, European-inspired design, and quiet views of the Tararua Ranges all come together.

It’s a place made for occasions.

Weddings here unfold across beautifully designed spaces, from garden ceremonies surrounded by four acres of grounds to celebrations inside the grand reception hall. With accommodation on-site, everything happens in one place. There’s a sense of detail in everything. Thoughtfully restored interiors, curated pieces throughout, and a setting that feels both timeless and completely unique.

Whether it’s a wedding, event, or a stay, The Milk Station offers something a little different, a place to gather, celebrate, and create something memorable.

Local tip: Plan to stay the night, waking up here the morning after is part of the experience.

Meet the makers with Louise and Dean from 🏡

Tucked away in the hills above the Kāpiti Coast, Aston Road Villa is the kind of place designed for complete escape.

Surrounded by native bush and overlooking the coastline, it’s a private, peaceful setting where the focus is simple, slow down, switch off, and take it all in.

Louise and Dean have created a space that feels thoughtful in every detail. A secluded villa, quiet surroundings, and the kind of atmosphere that makes it easy to settle in and stay a little longer.

Mornings start slowly, evenings are best spent watching the light change across the coast, and everything in between is yours to enjoy at your own pace.

Follow the lush garden path and you’ll find a vintage blue Bedford bus, cleverly converted into a cosy cafe brimming with charm. Inside, owner and chef Kirsty Green and her team serve up irresistible freshly baked treats, top-notch coffee, and plenty of good vibes.

It’s the perfect pit stop for cyclists and four-legged friends, too!

Meet the maker with Oscar from Southward Car Museum Events 🎶

At Southward Car Museum, there’s more going on than what you see on the showroom floor.

Behind the scenes, Oscar and the team bring the space to life as one of the coast’s most unique event venues, a place that’s hosted everything from live performances to weddings and large-scale events.

Originally opened in 1979 by Sir Len Southward, the theatre was designed to house the historic Wurlitzer organ from Auckland’s Civic Theatre. Today, it’s a flexible space that can shift from an angled auditorium for shows to a flat-floor setup for events and celebrations.

Up above the stage, the mother grid allows lighting and production to move seamlessly, while backstage there are green rooms, changing rooms, and spaces designed to support everything happening behind the curtain.

Whether you’re attending a performance or planning something of your own, it’s a place where a lot happens, both on stage and behind it.
