Die Wanderung von Pampacahuana nach Paucarcancha ist ein faszinierender Teil einer alternativen Route zum Machu Picchu, die den Salkantay-Trek mit dem klassischen Inka Trail verbindet. Der Weg beginnt in der Gemeinde Pampacahuana in den Hochanden, die für ihre Lage neben einem originalen Inka-Kanal bekannt ist. Von dort aus führt die Route stetig bergab, vorbei an kleinen Bächen und mehreren archäologischen Stätten, bis sie das im subtropischen Nebelwald gelegene Ruinengelände von Paucarcancha erreicht.
Dieser Abstieg ist ein Übergang zwischen zwei völlig verschiedenen Welten: von der kargen, hochgelegenen Andenlandschaft hinunter in die üppige, grüne Vegetation des Cusichaca-Tals.
