ONDOL: A BRIEF HISTORICAL INSIGHT OF THE BARRIO OF ONDOL, INABANGA, BOHOL.
HISTORY
The barrio of Ondol is located in the northern part of Inabanga. The people are superstitious. In view of the fact that they lead a backward life, none has become progressive. The first man to live in this place was Osting. Osting came from the poblacion. He loved solitude and he had plenty of it in this place. This man never got married. He had money but did not like to buy good clothing. When Osting was old, nobody took care of him. He did not invite a companion for fear that his money would be spent. This man died alone and miserable.
It was in the year 1814 when the first family came to settle in this place. The man belonged to the Aparece family. He was known for his uprightness, kindness, and good judgment. He was a fisherman by vocation. He was excellent in this line. Not long after, he accumulated much money. The Apareces now in this place are his descendants. This family is noted for its hospitality, cooperation, courtesy, and industry.
The people are good fishermen. They catch fish by the use of bobo, pangal, timing, golo-golo, and guitang. One who visits this barrio finds that every house has its own fishing boat. They are on the shore ready at any time of the day for use. Their chief means of earning a livelihood is fishing. Of course, they have some sidelines, poultry raising, pig raising, and duck raising.
A condemnable practice this barrio is they leave their pigs astray. No matter how much the teachers in this barrio worked to have the pigs placed in pens, there has been no favorable response.
NAME
Long time ago, there was a bulky part in the middle of the sea near Ondol. The inhabitants called the place "ogdo". The settlers marked the water near the bulky part of the sea upon knowing that it abound with fish, particularly dilis locally known as bulinaw. They marked the bulky place with a bamboo which was of tender age and has been cut or broken at the middle or upper section of the pole. This kind of bamboo is called in the locality as "ondol". When there was the official call for the registration of the official name of the place, the residents agreed to call their place Ondol.
FOLKWAYS
The people in Ondol are in general, cooperative. They are members of an association called "Viray". This association is organized to help those whose family member dies. As soon as a notice is given for a certain death, every member gives his share. One is very careful not to miss a death or he will not enjoy such help should death happen in his family.
