Jan Heweliusz and His Cosmos — a journey between the stars and Gdańsk

Every year on January 28, the birthday of the legendary 17th-century Gdańsk astronomer — Jan Heweliusz, I host a special themed tour. This is not a dry lecture, but a vivid story of a man who observed the sky from the rooftops of old Gdańsk .

During the walk, you will discover:
🌙 how the son of a brewer in the 17th century became one of the most renowned astronomers in Europe
🔭 why his observatory was located directly on city buildings
📖 what 17th-century star atlases looked like — and why they were used for centuries
❤️ the important role his wife played in his scientific work
🔥 how a single fire nearly destroyed the results of his life’s work

This is a story about 17th-century science, ambition, family, loss, and an extraordinary passion for the cosmos — all set against the backdrop of Gdańsk, a city that once looked to the stars .

Gdańsk has its own universe — and I’ll show you where it begins.

The Crane in – the true heart of the old port.

This iconic medieval structure is not just a beautiful landmark on the Motława River — it was once the largest port crane in medieval Europe and a key element of Gdansk’s power as a trading city.

The first wooden crane stood here already in the 14th century, with the earliest written mention dating back to 1367. After a devastating fire in 1442, the city decided to rebuild it on a much grander scale. Between 1442 and 1444, the brick-and-wood crane we see today was constructed — serving three roles at once: a port crane, a water gate to the city, and part of Gdańmnsk’s defensive system.

Inside, a brilliant wooden mechanism with massive treadwheels allowed just four workers to lift cargo weighing up to two tons. Goods were unloaded directly from ships, and the crane was also used to raise masts. The Crane belonged to the city, and its operation was supervised by a specially appointed crane master.

In the 19th century, with the development of modern port technology, the Crane slowly lost its original function. It was still used for ship maintenance, and even in the early 20th century helped lift ship sterns for repairs. After the death of the last crane master in 1858, the towers were adapted for everyday use — apartments, workshops, even a hairdresser once operated here.

During World War II, the Crane was badly damaged: the wooden structure burned down completely, and only about 60% of the brickwork survived. After careful reconstruction, in 1962 the Crane reopened — this time as a maritime museum .

👉 Today, you can step inside and see how medieval port technology really worked — and understand why Gdansk became one of the most important cities on the Baltic Sea.
