Stinky minke whale 😍

Risso’s dolphins coloration varies greatly throughout their lives. 🧐

Juveniles are generally dark grey or brownish, while adults can become almost completely white. What appear to be patterns on their bodies are actually numerous scars, resulting from social interactions between individuals as well as marks left by squid, their main prey. The older the animal is, the whiter it becomes - especially males! 🐬

Beyond communication, orcas also “perceive” the world through sound. 🧐

Their sounds include clicks used for echolocation, a system that allows them to interpret their environment through returning echoes. Sound is produced in the nasal region of the animal, passes through specialized internal structures, and is directed by the “melon,” a mass of fatty tissue located in the front part of the head. The sound is emitted in a highly directional beam, reflecting off objects in the environment and returning as an echo, allowing the construction of a “sound image” of their surroundings.

👉 Different killer whale ecotypes present distinct vocal patterns, associated with their ecological strategies and the type of prey they exploit. This highly specialized mechanism is actually present in all odontocetes, including dolphins and other toothed whales
