The Milkyway rising over Sand Beach & the Great Head in Acadia National Park, Maine โœจ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŒ

๐Ÿ“ธThis timelapse is comprised of 900+ photographs over the span of 5 hours ๐Ÿ’ซ

Despite being surrounded by granite cliffs and rocky shoreline, Sand Beach is a naturally formed sandy beach made primarily of crushed shell fragments from marine life such as mussels, barnacles, sea urchins, and snails. The small cove helps trap and hold the sediment, allowing the beach to exist along a coastline that is otherwise dominated by exposed rock. Even during summer, the Atlantic water here usually remains cold.

Rising directly beside the beach, Great Head is a granite peninsula shaped by glacial movement and long-term coastal erosion. The headland extends into the Atlantic and provides elevated views of Sand Beach, the surrounding cliffs, and the open ocean. The trail across Great Head follows rugged terrain above the shoreline and is one of the oldest hiking routes in Acadia.

Our Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony is still happening today at 10:00 AM on the Village Green in Bar Harbor, rain or shine.

We are honored to welcome the U.S. Army Band, who will be joining us throughout the ceremony, along with our keynote speaker, Sergeant Major Mario Marquez.

We invite our community to come together for a meaningful morning of remembrance as we honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Congratulations on the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the Acadia Gateway Center. Wednesday's ribbon cutting was the cumulation of several decades of planning and hard work. The Acadia Gateway Center is the latest Maine State Visitor Center, staffs Acadia National Park rangers to answer your park related questions, and is the transportation hub for the Island Explorer (which also launched it's service for the season on Wednesday).

For more information on the Acadia Gateway Center, visit https://www.nps.gov/places/acadia-gateway-center.htm

Watched the sunset on the edge of the ocean ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒ…alongside the stunning Bass Harbor Head Light Station in Acadia National Park Maine ๐Ÿ˜โ™ฅ๏ธ

Bass Harbor Head Light was first established in 1858 to help guide vessels entering Bass Harbor and navigating the rocky waters around the southwest side of Mount Desert Island.

The light station includes the lighthouse tower, keeperโ€™s house, and support buildings, all perched on granite cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Fun facts: the tower itself stands only 32 feet tall, but because it sits on elevated cliffs, the light is positioned about 56 feet above sea level. The keeperโ€™s house is still used as a residence for U.S. Coast Guard personnel, and the lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation today.

It is also the only lighthouse located within Acadia National Park, making it one of the parkโ€™s most historically significant coastal landmarks.

Earth Day in Acadia National Park ๐ŸŒŽโœจ

The Milky Way rising over Eagle Lake, one of the access points to the historic carriage road system. After a long winter closure, the Carriage Roads are now open, marking the start of another season to experience this part of the park on foot or by bike.

Built between 1913 and 1940, the carriage roads span about 45 miles and remain closed to motor vehicles. A reminder today of how protected landscapes like Acadia continue to be preserved and experienced as they were intended.

A peaceful winter scene along the rugged Acadia National Park coastline in Maine ๐ŸŒŠ I stood and waited, while admiring the beauty, for the perfect wave to hit the rocks in front of me โ˜บ๏ธ you can spot Beehive Mountain with a fresh coating of snow in the background ๐Ÿ˜

This coastline is shaped by glacial erosion and ongoing ocean forces, where ancient ice carved the granite and Atlantic waves continue to fracture and wear it down.

Looking inland from this stretch of shore, Beehive stands just over 500 feet tall. Its rounded granite form and steep eastern face were shaped by glacial movement more than 10,000 years ago. Together, this section of coastline and the nearby mountains reflect the combined effects of glacial carving and continued Atlantic erosion that define much of Mount Desert Island.
