Early morning at Ells Pier. 🌅

Named for Dr. John B. Ells, a longtime Bar Harbor dentist and civic leader, this pier is named after a man who had a pretty interesting connection to the town’s waterfront.

Dr. Ells chaired Bar Harbor’s Battleship Committee beginning in 1923 and became instrumental in bringing visiting naval ships to town. In 1946, he even helped bring the USS Missouri to Bar Harbor for a postwar exhibition. He had to guarantee 5,000 visitors a day. More than 16,000 people showed up over the three days the ship was here.

Naval visits weren't exactly quiet affairs either. They became major social occasions, with receptions, dinners, dances, and plenty of festivities throughout town. It’s hard to imagine the stories this waterfront could tell. For a deeper look at Dr. John B. Ells and the history of Bar Harbor’s waterfront, the Bar Harbor Historical Society is a great place to explore further.

There’s a certain feeling that comes with September in Maine. The days begin to get a little shorter, the air gets a little crisper, and before we know it, the forests of Acadia will be glowing with shades of gold, orange, red, and everything in between.

The photo above may not be what Acadia looks like quite yet, but we can’t wait for this season to arrive! 🍁

If you’re planning a fall visit, you can follow Maine’s changing colors through the official Maine Fall Foliage Reports, which are updated throughout the season with current conditions across the state. The 2026 reporting season begins September 16 and can be found on Mainefoliage.com

🌲 How old do you think this tree is?

Take a closer look at the twisted trunk of this Northern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) in Acadia. 🌲

Also known as arborvitae, its name comes from the Latin for “tree of life,” a fitting name for a tree that can live for centuries.

Northern White Cedars are remarkably adaptable and can grow in rocky, wet, and nutrient poor soils, making them well suited to the challenging landscapes found throughout Acadia.

According to forest ecologist Tom Wessels, the twists and growth patterns of trees can offer clues about their age and the conditions they've experienced throughout their lives.

Their weathered, twisted forms can tell a story of years spent growing through challenging conditions.

Sometimes, you don't have to find the biggest tree in the forest to find one with the best story. 🌲

Winding through Acadia National Park’s historic carriage roads are 17 unique stone-faced bridges, each designed to blend into the landscape around it.

Built as part of John D. Rockefeller Jr.’s carriage road system between 1917 and 1940, these bridges cross everything from streams and waterfalls to roads and rocky cliffs. While they look like they were built entirely from stone, they’re actually steel-reinforced concrete structures covered in locally quarried stone.

No two are exactly alike, and that's part of what makes exploring the carriage roads so special. You might be focused on the views, the trees, or the trail ahead and suddenly find yourself passing beneath one of these incredible pieces of Acadia's history.

One of Acadia’s most iconic little landmarks is also one of its most memorable hikes! 🥾🪨

The Bubble Rock Trail leads hikers through the woods and up the south side of South Bubble, where you’ll find the famous glacial erratic perched dramatically near the summit. And yes, it really is as big as it looks!

The hike is short, but don’t let the mileage fool you. There are some steep, rocky sections along the way, so sturdy footwear and a little extra care are a good idea. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views and greeted by the famous Bubble Rock!

If you’re looking for a hike that packs a lot of scenery into a relatively short adventure, Bubble Rock is a classic. Just remember: stay on the trail, give other hikers some space, and please leave Bubble Rock exactly where you found it! 😉

🎬 Seaside Cinema continues tonight! 🍿

Tonight’s movie is The LEGO Movie, showing at sunset!

Every Wednesday night from mid July through the end of August, we bring free movies to the community at sunset, complete with free popcorn. It’s a summer tradition we’re proud to continue year after year.

A huge thank you to all of the volunteers who help make each night happen. We truly couldn’t do it without you!

And a very special thank you to Chris Vincenty of Reel Pizza who has been helping us set up the screen, projector, and movies for more than a decade. His support has helped bring over 10 years of free movies to our community. ❤️
