🚂 Throwback Thursday: All Aboard the Bar Harbor Express! 🎞️

Long before visitors arrived in Bar Harbor by car, one of the exciting ways to reach Mount Desert Island was by train!

The Bar Harbor Express was a seasonal passenger train that brought travelers north from cities including New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. toward the Bar Harbor region. 🚂

In the early days of the service, passengers could travel by rail to Mount Desert Ferry, where they would transfer to a ferry for the trip across Frenchman Bay to Bar Harbor.

The rail and ferry connection to Mount Desert Ferry ended in 1931, but the Bar Harbor Express continued serving the region, with service eventually reaching Ellsworth and later Bangor.

After decades of bringing summer travelers north, the Bar Harbor Express made its final run in September 1960, as automobiles and air travel increasingly changed the way people traveled to Maine.

Today, an old postcard like this gives us a glimpse into a time when getting to Bar Harbor was an adventure that began long before you reached the island. ❤️

🌟 Member Spotlight: Galyn's

Since opening in 1986, Galyn’s has been a beloved part of Bar Harbor, originally opened by Gail and her husband. Today, they continue to welcome guests with great food, beautiful surroundings, and plenty of local character.

Located at 17 Main Street, right across from Agamont Park, Galyn’s is filled with artwork from a variety of artists throughout the building. The first floor offers a beautiful dining space, while upstairs you’ll find highly requested window seating and a cozy bar tucked away with a little speakeasy feel.

Galyn’s is open daily from 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM. If you need an accessible table on the first floor, they recommend calling ahead when making your reservation so they can best accommodate you.

Make sure to stop in and support Galyn’s before they close for the season on Saturday, November 28th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving!

If you’re looking for a longer, more gradual way up Cadillac Mountain, the South Ridge Trail is a beautiful option.

Along the way, you’ll come across Featherbed Pond, a great spot to stop for a little break and take in the scenery before continuing up to the summit.

🍂 With fall foliage just around the corner, it’s a great time to get out and enjoy the trails!
