Every September 3, Viterbo comes alive for one of Italy’s most extraordinary traditions: the Trasporto della Macchina di Santa Rosa, part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Viterbo holds a special place in the Spanish Steps story. Located directly on the Via Francigena, it is our Italian home base, where Dana and Virginio live, and the setting for our Italian Base Camp tour.

The excitement builds throughout the entire day. Spectators begin gathering along the route hours in advance, while the Facchini di Santa Rosa, dressed in their traditional white uniforms, parade through the historic streets.

Then, at exactly 9:00 PM, comes the moment everyone has been waiting for:

“Sollevate e fermi!” — “Lift and hold!”

The enormous illuminated Macchina rises onto the shoulders of the Facchini, and its breathtaking journey through the medieval streets of Viterbo begins.

Thousands of people. An entire city holding its breath. Centuries of tradition carried through the streets on the shoulders of the Facchini.

For us at Spanish Steps, this isn’t just a beautiful Italian tradition we come to see. It’s part of the place we call home.

CAMINO CROATIA. THE END. THE BEGINNING.

Our Camino Croatia journey ends in Šibenik, at the doors of the magnificent Cathedral of St. James, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

But centuries ago, for Croatian pilgrims, Šibenik could mark something very different:

a beginning.

Pilgrims came to the Confraternity of St. James before setting out toward Santiago de Compostela, an extraordinary journey across Europe, covering thousands of kilometers on foot and, in those days, including the long walk home again.

Today, what is our destination carries the memory of those departures.

The scallop shell is still carved into the stones. The old pilgrimage tradition is alive again. And Camino Croatia follows an authentic historic route shaped by centuries of footsteps, faith, travel and encounter.

For Spanish Steps, Šibenik will be the final destination of our Camino Croatia journey.

But there, standing beneath the Cathedral of St. James, we will be arriving at a place where others once prepared to leave.

Spanish Steps and the Game of Thrones

Not every day of scouting for a new Spanish Steps journey takes us into the world of Game of Thrones…

Dana is back on the trail in Croatia, working on the new walking adventure we’ll be sharing with you in 2027.

And along the way: Klis Fortress, the spectacular Croatian stronghold high above Split that became the city of Meereen in Game of Thrones.

Daenerys, the Unsullied and the people of Meereen once filled these walls on screen. Today, we are walking them for a different reason: exploring the history, landscapes and stories that will become part of our own Croatian journey.

A little Hollywood along the way never hurts. 😊

August is usually a quiet month for Spanish Steps walking tours.

But this year, there was one extraordinary exception:

the Total Solar Eclipse of August 12, 2026.

Across northern Spain, the Path of Totality crossed the ancient path of the Camino de Santiago, a fleeting astronomical path meeting a route shaped by more than a thousand years of pilgrimage, history and human footsteps.

For Spanish Steps, the spectacular Camino del Norte was the perfect place to experience that crossing: wild Atlantic cliffs, hidden coves, fishing villages, green countryside and a remarkable cultural heritage along the way.

Then, on August 12, the Moon moved directly between Earth and the Sun.

Daylight faded. The landscape changed. The Sun’s brilliant surface disappeared, revealing the delicate glow of the solar corona, while brilliant points of sunlight flickered along the Moon’s edge.

For a few unforgettable moments, two paths became one:

the Path of Totality
and the ancient path of the Camino.

With Mario and Camilo’s experience, skill and intimate knowledge of the region guiding the way, our pilgrims continued westward toward Santiago, finally reaching the city on foot, receiving their Compostelas and celebrating a journey that brought together two once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Three unforgettable days together in Asturias.

Our Spanish Steps team gathered at Mario and Pili’s beautiful finca, surrounded by green mountains, fresh air and the peaceful rhythm of nature. Thanks to their wonderful hospitality, we had the chance to slow down, reconnect and simply enjoy being together.

We shared ideas, honest feedback, plans for the future, laughter, long conversations and stories around the campfire. We also took time to remember Judy, whose spirit, warmth and love for bringing people together remain such an important part of Spanish Steps.

These days reminded us that Spanish Steps is much more than tours and walking routes. It is a group of people who care deeply about what they do, about the travelers who walk with us and about one another.

We returned home with new energy, stronger friendships and many beautiful memories.

Thank you to everyone who made these days so special.
